8 Signs You Are in a Toxic Relationship
A toxic relationship can be very frustrating and mentally draining. This kind of relationship does not only apply to romantic relationships but also friendships. As someone who has been in a toxic relationship, here are some signs I saw that might help you out.
They are never truly happy for you
If your gut feeling tells you that they aren’t happy for you when you excel, then chances are your gut feeling is right. You shouldn’t surround yourself with people who aren’t happy for you when you achieve something good or something you’ve always wanted.
They lie to you
They don’t have to lie about something big for it to be considered bad. Whether it’s about their plans on Sunday or who they are seeing, a lie is a lie. A lie doesn’t only mean that they don’t trust, but it also means they are hiding things from you.
They compete with you
Whether it’s over a job, a partner or a new class you are doing, if they constantly try to compete with you and don’t want you to succeed or excel in something, they are toxic
They talk about you behind your back
This is a big sign that the people you surround yourself with are toxic. If a person cares about you, they wouldn’t talk about you behind your back.
They constantly put you down
If they constantly insult you as a “joke”, then chances are they mean it. It also means they like putting you down because it makes them feel good.
They are controlling you
Another sign that you are in a toxic relationship is if they constantly tell you what to do. Whether it’s who you’re allowed to hang out with, what you are and aren’t allowed to wear and what classes you should or should not apply for, they are controlling you. If you feel like you are forced to do something you don’t want to do just to be able to hang out with them, they are toxic.
They are always asking you for favors
If they constantly ask you for favors but are nowhere to be seen when you need help, then you’re in a toxic relationship.
You don’t feel happy when you are with them
If you don’t feel happy when you’re around them, then chances are you feel that way for a reason. Remember that your happiness always comes first. If you’re not happy then ask yourself, why are you surrounding yourself with people that make you feel insecure, sad, and unhappy?
