You said to your mind, “I want everyone to like me. I don’t want anyone to speak badly of me. I want everything I say and do to be acceptable and pleasing to everyone. I don’t want anyone to hurt me. And I want everything to happen that I do like.” Then you said, “Now, mind, figure out how to make every one of these things a reality, even if you have to think about it day and night.” And of course your mind said, “I’m on the job. 8 Profound Thoughts to Find Your Deepest Inner Self if You Really Want to Transform Your Life

An impressive mindset shift that changed my life and can revolutionize yours too

A masterpiece

That’s how I’d call Michael Singer’s book “The Untethered soul”.

I don’t say this, referring to a book because of how it is written, how beautiful the cover is, or how easy to read it is. I wouldn’t even say it because I enjoyed it a lot.

I state this when a book:

  • Produces a profound impact on my life.
  • Adds great value to my way of thinking.
  • I can put into practice the concepts it says.

This last point was the one I was most hesitant about when I decided to read it a long time ago. I was kind of “This will be too spiritual, too abstract for my way of thinking…”.

Fortunately and again, I was wrong. So wrong.

I’m very pragmatic, and I always look for knowledge I can put into practice. If it isn’t so, it annoys me a lot.

This book was just the opposite. No doubt about it: it was an investment.

Last week, I read some of my notes about the book, some takeaways, and they still surprised me. Not just because of what they say, but because I’ve been applying them for such a long time that my life has completely changed.

If a book changes your life, you cannot ask for more.

Here, I will just share things you can apply to your daily life, and that can be totally life-changing, although I’d highly recommend reading this book to navigate deep inside each concept. It’s worth it!

I will follow a logical way of thinking so that you can easily and comfortably understand how the story goes.

Important warning: everything that is between quotes is Michael Singer’s wise piece of advice, unfortunately, not mine (there are very few geniuses in the world).

Let’s dive in!

1. Learning who you are

If you want to understand what life is all about, the first thing you have to think deeply is this:

What the hell am I?

It seems a very deep question, but you’ll see it isn’t (well, just a little bit).

First, you have to identify the 2 different aspects of your inner being:

  1. You. This is “the awareness, the witness, the center of your willful intentions”.
  2. That which you watch.

Here you will find the first problem: “the part that you watch never shuts up”.

As Michael says, “if you could get rid of that part, even for a moment, the peace and serenity would be the nicest vacation you’ve ever had.”

” There is nothing more important to true growth than realizing that you are not the voice of the mind — you are the one who hears it.”

I know this distinction may sound weird, but just read several times the quote above. When you understand it, you start separating you from your inner voice, which’s a huge step in life.

You’re just a listener.

This will allow you, how you’ll see later on, to decide what you listen to or what you don’t listen to. That’s the beginning of your freedom.

Be patient and just keep on thinking about this concept.

To better understanding the concept, here I share an excellent description Michael writes about life. Do you feel identified with it? I’m pretty sure you do.

” You have an underlying pattern of thoughts that goes on around you all the time. This pattern of thoughts stays pretty much the same. You are as familiar and comfortable with your normal thought patterns as you are with the living space of your home. You also have emotions that are your norm: a certain amount of fear, a certain amount of love, and a certain amount of insecurity. You know that if certain things happen, one or more of these emotions will flare up and dominate your awareness. Then, eventually, they will settle back down to the norm. You know this so well that you are very busy inside making sure nothing happens to create these disturbances. In fact, you are so preoccupied with controlling your world of thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations that you don’t even know you’re in there. That is the normal state for most people.”

2. Understanding how you frame the world

Now that you’ve found out who you are (just a listener), let’s see how you frame the world to understand it better because, as you’ll see, here’s where all your troubles start.

The world is infinite. Everything, in truth, is infinite. We’re floating in the space, “inside” something we don’t understand.

What’s the space?

Where are you?

Whenever you don’t have a beginning and an end, you get confused.

That’s why you create boundaries.

” Boundaries create the appearance of finiteness in infinite space.”

Michael defines pretty well how you (and everybody) frame the world to make it manageable for you:

“ Your views, your opinions, your preferences, your concepts, your goals, and your beliefs are all ways of bringing the infinite universe down to the finite where you can feel a sense of control.

Since the analytical mind cannot handle the infinite, you created an alternate reality of finite thoughts that can remain fixed within your mind. You have taken the whole, broken it into pieces, and selected a handful of these pieces to be put together in a certain way within your mind.

This mental model has become your reality. You must now struggle day and night to make the world fit your model, and you label everything that doesn’t fit as wrong, bad, or unfair.”

3. Assuming you are “the problem”

Now you know you’re just the one who’s listening to your monkey mind, a monkey that appears to better look like a parrot because it doesn’t stop talking to you.

At the same time, to understand concepts you don’t understand, you’ve created a reality, a world you have defined to feel secure or, at least, to feel you understand what the world is like.

The problem is that reality is something you’ve created. It’s not reality itself.

” Your consciousness is actually experiencing your mental model of reality, not reality itself. ”

Singer defines pretty well the complex job of your psyche:

” This is what has happened to your psyche. You have mistreated it by giving it a responsibility that is incomprehensible. Just stop for a moment and see what you have given your mind to do. You said to your mind, “I want everyone to like me. I don’t want anyone to speak badly of me. I want everything I say and do to be acceptable and pleasing to everyone. I don’t want anyone to hurt me. I don’t want anything to happen that I don’t like. And I want everything to happen that I do like.” Then you said, “Now, mind, figure out how to make every one of these things a reality, even if you have to think about it day and night.” And of course your mind said, “I’m on the job. I will work on it constantly.”

If you read the paragraph above, you will laugh and feel sad at the same time because it’s raw, and I’m pretty sure this is what your life may look like.

Nothing is wrong.

At least, you’re starting to learn what life is all about. What the story is. This is the first giant step.

You have to accept life “will run with forces far outside your control, regardless of what your mind says about it”.

The moment you understand that is when you begin implementing significant changes in your life to overcome the situation. You start seeing tools you didn’t know even existed.

I did it. It works.

Let’s keep on learning! I’m on fire!

4. Believing you are “the solution”

Now, you’re in a perfect position because you don’t have to ask WHAT the solution for your life is.

Instead, you have to ask WHO the solution is. The answer is pretty easy: YOU.

Here’s the big decision you have to take:

” There are two ways you can live: you can devote your life to staying in your comfort zone, or you can work on your freedom. In other words, you can devote your whole life to the process of making sure everything fits within your limited model, or you can devote your life to freeing yourself from the limits of your model.”

For me, this was another of my life-changing moments reading the book.

Knowing you have the power to be free is awesome. It’s liberating. You control everything. Nothing and no one can affect you.

” Imagine a comfort zone that is so expanded that it can easily fit the entire day, no matter what happens. The day unfolds and the mind doesn’t say anything. You simply interact with the day with a peaceful, fully inspired heart. If your edges happen to get hit, the mind doesn’t complain. It all just passes through. This is how great beings live. When you are trained, like a great athlete, to immediately relax through your edges when they get hit, then it’s all over. You realize that you will always be fine. Nothing can ever bother you except your edges, and now you know what to do with them. You end up loving your edges because they point your way to freedom. All you have to do is constantly relax and lean into them. Then one day, when you least expect it, you fall through into the infinite. That is what it means to go beyond.”

I can state the paragraph above. I thought it. I internalized it. I practiced it. I did it. I went beyond.

Today, I live that way.

The more I practice, as always happens, the better I am on it. It’s a superpower. A life-changing one. Take my word for it.

5. Knowing how to reach freedom in life

I think freedom is one of the most demanded skills or situations for human beings.

You want to be free:

  • Free to decide what to do about your life.
  • Free to decide what you spend your money on.
  • Free to manage your schedule. Your time. Your life.

But, what’s all that if you cannot be free because you’re prisoned by your emotions, if you’re a prisoner in yourself?

That’s what you learn applying Michael Singer’s principles: to manage your emotions.

” You have the ability to not go with any of these thoughts. You can just sit in the seat of consciousness and let go. A thought or emotion emerges, you notice it, and it passes by because you allow it to. This technique of freeing yourself is done with the understanding that thoughts and emotions are just objects of consciousness. When you see your heart start getting anxious, you are obviously aware of this experience. But who is aware? It is the consciousness, the indwelling being, the Soul, the Self. It is the seer, the one who sees. The changes you experience in your inner energy flow are simply objects of this consciousness. If you want to be free, then every time you feel any change in the energy flow, relax behind it. Don’t fight with it, don’t try to change it, and don’t judge it. Don’t say, “Oh, I can’t believe I’m still feeling this. I promised myself I wouldn’t think about that car anymore.” Don’t do that; you’ll just end up going with the guilt thoughts instead of the car thoughts. You have to let them all go.”

This is freedom at its pure state.

If your emotions don’t control you, it’s when you control your life.

You feel the emotion, but you don’t get attached to it. You feel it, pass it, and keep on living.

” People do not understand how much they are suffering because they have never experienced what it is like to not suffer.”

It’s true, when you’re so attached to emotions, you cannot know what living without being attached to them looks like. I can promise you it’s amazing.

I’ve become a better self just by doing so. People told me this.

I make better decisions, more rational ones.

My life has improved because life is just a combination of the habits you perform with consistency and the decisions you make.

So when you have “bad” energies inside you, just feel them. There’s nothing wrong. You’re human. You’re not a robot. You have and feel sensations.

Always remember that you’re just the one who’s watching, the listener.

” Once you learn that it’s okay to feel inner disturbances, and that they can no longer disturb your seat of consciousness, you will be free.”

6. Managing energy

The universe is energy. The world is energy. Life is energy. I’m energy. You’re energy.

That’s why it’s so important to manage it correctly.

If you become an expert about managing energy, your life will become better.

” If you want to be free, simply view inner pain as a temporary shift in your energy flow. A wise person remains centered enough to let go every time the energy shifts into a defensive mode.”

You can combine 2 tactics to implement the best energy management practices:

  1. Being present.
  2. Acceptance.

One of the best ways to manage energy is by being present.

” You’re generally using your will to resist one of two things: that which has already happened or that which hasn’t happened yet. You are sitting inside resisting impressions from the past or thoughts about the future. Think of how much energy is wasted resisting what has already happened. Since the event has already passed, you are actually struggling with yourself, not with the event. In addition, contemplate how much energy is wasted resisting what might happen. Since most of the things you think might happen never do, you are just throwing your energy away.”

When you understand this, you start paying attention to mindfulness and techniques that facilitate being present, such as meditation.

This is when you understand being present and focusing just on it will make you perform at your best.

Just by doing so, I’ve exponentially grown my outcomes talking about performed tasks, finished projects, achieved goals… Things I can measure. Again, pragmatism, results, things you can see, feel, live.

” Acceptance means events can make it through you without resistance.

Acceptance means you never have another problem for the rest of your life.

This is because events are not problems; they’re just events. Your resistance to them is what causes the problem.

But, again, don’t think that because you accept reality, it means you don’t deal with things. You do deal with them. You just deal with them as events that are taking place on the planet Earth, and not as personal problems.”

Acceptance, as Singer says, doesn’t mean you don’t do anything, you don’t care about things, nothing matters to you.

You do try to solve things, to manage them. The point is the perspective from which you look at situations.

They’re not problems.

Problem is a subjective term you’ve created.

That’s why I call it a situation or scenario. It’s not something negative. It’s just something that happened. Something I have to pay attention to.

Here, for example, you can train and practice the distinction between problem and opportunity. It’s just a matter of your vision.

I thought COVID-19 was a problem for my companies. But it was an opportunity to boost new types of services, such as the online ones. I thought it. I did it. I succeeded.

When you start seeing all your scenarios as opportunities, I cannot describe how life-changing it is.

” When the events of this world make it through you, you have reached a deep spiritual state.”

7. Being happy

I’ll finish the article analyzing two big concepts in anyone’s life: happiness and death.

Let’s start with the former.

The moment you understand you’re the solution to everything, depending on how you see things is how you’ll live your life, happiness is just the same thing.

” If you decide that you’re going to be happy from now on for the rest of your life, you will not only be happy, you will become enlightened. Unconditional happiness is the highest technique there is. You don’t have to learn Sanskrit or read any scriptures. You don’t have to renounce the world. You just have to really mean it when you say that you choose to be happy.”

The point is: are you ready to be happy regardless of what happens?

It’s always the same technique as you’ve seen before. You just have to see events in life as something that happens. It’s your interpretation of them that will bring you the type of emotions you’ll feel. Happiness is your only choice.

8. Looking at death as your best friend

It sounds kind of sinister, but it’s true.

Death can become your best friend in life.

Do you remember “The bucket list”, that Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman’s movie in which two terminally men escape from a cancer ward and head off on a road trip with a wish list of to-dos before they die?

Isn’t it stupid to start living life when you’re about to die?

” Death changes everything in a flash. That’s the reality of the situation. If all these things can be changed in an instant, then maybe they aren’t so real after all.

That’s what happens when you’re told that death is around the corner: you change, life doesn’t change.

You’re the one who throws your life away; you waste every second of it. You get in your car, drive from here to there, and you don’t see anything. You’re not even there. You’re busy thinking about what you’re going to do next. You’re a month ahead of yourself, or even a year. You’re not living life; you’re living mind. So it is you who throws your life away, not death.”

Singer nailed it once again.

That contract which was so important, that discussion with your partner, those “big” problems that upset you day by day become nothing if someone tells you you’ll die tomorrow.

That’s the best proof they’re “so important” because you made them “so important”.

It’s something you’ve created and something that, again, you can easily destroy.

Do it today, do it now.

” Don’t you understand that every minute you’re a step closer to death?”

This is an amazing tool talking about managing terrible situations.

Imagine you will die tomorrow.

No need to be so dramatic. Just think how you will see those “important and big problems” 10 years from now.

All things are temporal. They’re all just passing through time and space. If you have patience, this terrible situation will pass.

“ As you went deeper and deeper, you would start noticing a phenomenal thing — you are no longer judging.”

Takeaways

” If you’re neither pushing life away, nor pulling it toward you, then you are not creating any resistance. You are simply present. In this state, you are just witnessing and experiencing the events of life taking place. If you choose to live this way, you will see that life can be lived in a state of peace.”

I can’t stop reading and thinking about these thoughts and principles.

I’ve even read this article more than 30 times.

Believing 100% convinced all your life depends on you gives you power, control, security, comfort, sense, freedom.

You feel you’re the pilot because you really are.

The outside world is just something that is there, interacting with you but not affecting you at all. It’s just a portion of a party you call life.

Know you. Know the problem. Find out the solution. Feel free. Feel present. Be happy.
