Recently, Nirmal Purja set a world record of climbing 14 peaks above 8000m in 7 months which is unbelievable. And 8 of the mountains are from Nepal.
There are only 14 peaks which are above 8000 m in this world. Stepping into any of those mountains would be challenging, costly, and demanding. You need to have set skills and experience in the mountains. Many fatalities and casualties are reported every year mostly by avalanche, high altitude illness, trauma, cold injury, and poor recovery plan. The top mountains prone to death and casualty are Mount Everest and K2. Mount Everest
Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world located at Solukhumbu in Nepal. Previously its elevation was 8,848 m but the authorities have established the most recent height of 8,848.86 m. Kanchenjunga
It is the third highest mountain in the world located at Taplejung distict in eastern Nepal. Its elevation is 8,586 m. It was first ascended in 25 May 1955 by George Band and Joe Brown. Lhotse
Lhotse is the fourth highest mountain in the world at 8,516 meters. It is located in Solukhumbu, Nepal. First ascenders were Fritz Luchsinger, Ernst Reiss. The most fascinating part of this mountain is its proximity to Mount Everest. Even you can view this mountain from Everest Base Camp.
Makalu
Makalu is the fifth highest mountain in the world. Its elevation is 8,485 m. It is located in Solukhumbu 19 km southeast of Mount Everest. It is a isolated peak whose shape is four sided pyramid. It is one of the hardest and technical mountains and considered most difficult mountain to climb in the world. Makalu is notorious for its sharp edges and steep ridges. Lionel Terray and Jean Couzy were first ascenders of this mountain.
Cho oyu
Cho Oyu is the sixth highest mountain in the world at 8,188 m. Cho Oyu stands for ‘’Torquesse Goddess’’ in Tibetan. It stands on Nepal-China border, 20 km west of the Mount Everest. First ascenders were Pasang Dawa Lama, Herbert Tichy, Joseph Jochler. It is considered to be the easiest mountain to climb within 8000ers.
Dhaulagiri
Dhaulagiri is the seventh highest mountain in the world at 8,167 m. Dhaulagiri meaning comes from Sanskrit where Dhaula means ‘dazzling white’ and giri means ‘mountain’. Its located 34 km west of Annapurna. It was first ascended on 1960 by a Swiss/Austrian/Nepali expedition.
Manaslu
Manaslu is the eighth highest mountain in the world at 8,163 metres above sea level.It is located in the west central part of Nepal. The name Manaslu means ‘’mountain of the spirit’’. It’s first ascenders were Artur Hajzer, Gyaljen Norbu, Toshio Imanishi in 9 May 1956.
Annapurna
Annapurna is the 10th highest mountain in the world at 8,091 m. It is located in Annapurna mountain range of Gandaki Province. Annapurna is also considered to be the most difficult mountain to climb because of its route. First ascent was 3 june 1950 by Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal. Annapurna circuit is famous for trekking. It is usually 15–20 days trekking, leaving kathmandu to stopover in Pokhara.
The signicant motivating factor for me to trek and climb mountain is the sense of freedom it gives and to escape from the normal rules and constrainsts of our society.
