I absolutely love the versatility and imagination of James Patterson’s novels.
However, you might notice many of my favorites are older when James Patterson was younger.
Not to say that his writing has diminished, I think he just spends more of his time mentoring other writers, which is commendable — I wish I were one of those.
Perhaps you fancy the suspense of an evening filled with back-alleyway deals, criminal coverups, blood-soaked rags, and a detective fighting against all odds to beat the deadline.
Would you rather fill your afternoons and evenings with the thrill of mystery and mayhem with colorful characters and intertwining plots?
Perhaps you’d like to return to your younger years in a heartfelt examination of the trivialities of youth. If you like a good book, then you’ll love James Patterson!
Check out my list of top 8 novels by this prolific author below.

#8 — See How They Run
An older novel but one that easily made my list. I was introduced to this before my heavy Alex Cross “phase.” It is a perfect example of James Patterson’s ability to rip me out of my seat and drag me kicking and screaming across foreign lands. In this semi-psychological thriller, we are quickly taken from an awards show to murder, following the good doctor searching for answers.
“His family has been murdered. His past lover is running for her life. And now, Dr. David Strauss must travel across Europe to track down the killers. — Amazon blurb.

#7 — Witch & Wizard (Witch & Wizard series Book 1)
I will always read any book with even a hint of magic, witchcraft, or wizardry. This five-book series was co-written by Patterson and Gabrielle Charbonnet. “Witch & Wizard” possesses all the familiar vibes of a dystopian “Salem-Legend” suspense novel but with an exciting, edge-of-your-seat approach. Follow two kids caught up in “Wiccan” lore determined to fight for survival.
“When a dystopian government controls every aspect of society, siblings Wisty and Whit Allgood may be the world’s only hope in this magical beginning of James Patterson’s Witch & Wizard series.” — Amazon blurb.

#6 — Jack & Jill (Alex Cross Book 3)
It is an extraordinary example of a crime novel within the expansive James Patterson collection. The enigmatic and merciless antagonists, Jack and Jill, bring life and intrigue to the story, leaving a lasting impression on the readers’ minds. Patterson skillfully interlaces multiple plot lines, crafting a complex and engrossing narrative that keeps the audience on their toes until the final pages. This remarkable work is an unequivocal recommendation for enthusiasts of captivating mysteries, offering a gratifying challenge of solving the unknown.

#5 — Red Alert: An NYPD Red Mystery
In this gripping thriller the renowned authors James Patterson and Marshall Karp immerse readers in the bustling backdrop of New York City. We follow the journey of NYPD detective Zach Jordan and his partner Kylie MacDonald, who find themselves entangled in a perplexing string of murders devoid of any discernible pattern or rationale. As they dig deeper, disturbing evidence unveils an ominous plot that threatens the very fabric of the city they call home. Navigating the cutthroat world of Hollywood, Jordan and MacDonald encounter a cadre of influential actors, directors, and producers, exposing the dark underbelly of the entertainment industry. With time dwindling, they must harness their investigative prowess to apprehend the elusive killer before he can unleash his deadly fury again.

#4 — The Angel Experiment (Maximum Ride, Book 1)
The first book in the YA series, Maximum Ride. Maximum Ride, or simply Max and her companions, called the “flock” (Fang, Iggy, Nudge, Gasman, and Angel), may seem ordinary, but they can fly — with wings on their bodies. However, their reality is far from ideal. Angel is kidnapped, and they must rescue her from the cruel “School” where they were experimented on. Their journey takes them to Death Valley, California, where they face challenges and encounters. In New York City, they also battle the dangerous “Erasers,” part-human and part-wolf hybrids. Whether above Central Park or in the subway, Max and her family face a thrilling expedition.
Although this is a YA series, anyone can enjoy this fantasy adventure.

#3 — The President Is Missing
More than just a political thriller, James Patterson and Bill Clinton lay the stage wonderfully as they take you through an “all-too-real” crisis of presidential proportions. The realistic depiction of government paired with the knuckle-whitening action left me with no clues as to who was behind this madness as I followed the nation, looking for its leader.
No matter how you feel about Bill Clinton, his presidency, or co-writers in general, this book will keep you turning page after page until its ultimate action-packed conclusion.
“Don’t miss the #1 New York Times bestselling thriller from the world’s bestselling author, James Patterson: an “undeniably gripping ride through the hidden passageways of power and politics” that “moves like Air Force One” (Michael Connelly).” — Amazon blurb.

#2–1st to Die (Women’s Murder Club)
The first Women’s Murder Club. We meet Lindsay Boxer, an inspector met with a horrific bride-groom murder that sends her spiraling through her own psychosis as she desperately searches for the truth. This is just the start of a terrific ride that takes readers through some 24 books.
“Four crime-solving friends face off against a killer in San Francisco in the Women’s Murder Club novel that started James Patterson’s thrilling series.” — Amazon blurb.

#1 — Along Came a Spider (Alex Cross Book 1)
Upon its first release in 1993, this murder/kidnapping mystery shot swiftly to the top of the bestseller list, firmly establishing the unforgettable persona of Alex Cross (since then, there have been 34 Cross novels). This literary triumph was subsequently adapted into a highly successful film in 2001, featuring the incomparable Morgan Freeman in the role of Cross. Imbued with an intricate tapestry of clues and multiple suspects, readers are invited into a riveting journey alongside Cross as he races against the relentless tick of the clock to rescue the abducted children. Renowned for its immersive descriptions, intricate characterizations, and unforeseen plot twists, James Patterson’s “Along Came a Spider” is the peak of exhilarating and gratifying works in his prestigious repertoire — it will always be a great read or re-read.

I just finished, “Run, Rose, Run,” with Dolly Parton, so, I would have to give it an honorable mention or include it in the top five.
