8 Mistakes a Startup Should Avoid
Some of the most common mistakes in entrepreneurs
When you start a new company, you will have many obstacles to overcome to be able to walk and that it can survive this difficult stage of the project. In the way of solving the difficulties that are going to present you, you can make some mistakes, which could be very small, they can bring you great consequences and you should avoid them from the beginning.
The intention of this article is to be able to transmit the teachings that my startup left me so that they can take advantage of the opportunity to move their company forward.
As an entrepreneur you have to be cautious, never make hasty decisions and analyze well every step that you are going to take in your business.
Here are 8 tips so you can make the most of it.
1. Create the Startup alone
Startups have a lot of work to do when starting, since there is nothing created and you have to develop the product or service that you are going to provide to your future clients. You will have to coordinate all the work and do it yourself.
If you are alone in the project, the safest thing is that it will be very difficult for you to grow it, since you will not have the sufficient economic base and it will be more difficult for you to obtain external support to be able to promote it.
Ideally, you can start with a small team or, failing that, with a partner who is in charge of the administration and financial tasks of the company, this is the most delicate part and to which more attention must be paid to avoid bankruptcy of the company.
2. Not spending enough time marketing the product / service.
It is very common that the startup they create is in an existing market, so they have to fight to enter a market since they have established companies and have a team dedicated to planning marketing strategies for the products / services they offer to the public. This is why you should focus on how you are going to market your product / service and not waste much time on small details.
3. Target a very small niche
Startups to avoid having to deal directly with established companies, choose to target very small niches, this can be a death sentence for the expansion of the company because when your company begins to grow, the niche will not do the same shape.
Ideally, you should expand your offer of products / services as your company grows.
4. Unrealistic goals
When starting a company in a market in which you have no experience, such as its behavior, you have to do a market study so that the goals you set are realistic. It is worthless to have a goal that is impossible to achieve at that time, perhaps you can achieve it in the next 2 years, but in the immediate future you do not have the resources and capacity to achieve it.
Having a realistic goal will make you make a good marketing plan for your product / services, as well as the hours of work you have to invest in each task.
5. Not having a business plan
If you do not have a business plan for your company, it is as if you were sailing in the sea with no direction to somewhere. For your company to grow, you must develop a good business plan where you detail what are the short-term goals and what are the long-term goals.
With a good business plan you should know what the opportunities are that the market offers, what are the needs of the consumers and how the difficulties that will arise will be overcome.
6. Not having a plan B
Every entrepreneur has to know that we are children of destiny and that things may not go as planned. This is why we must have a plan B ready, what are we going to do if things do not go as well as we expected?
Do you suppose that everything will go according to plan? Maybe yes, maybe no.
7. Take advice from people who are not experts in the area
When starting a new business you will find many people who will want to advise you on how you should do things (perhaps with very good intentions to help you grow), but since they have no experience in the area, these tips instead of helping you will otherwise.
To avoid this, it is advisable to find a mentor who has experience creating a startup and who has experience of running a business.
8. Know when to launch your company to the market
Knowing the right time to launch your company to the market is essential, since it is the time when your product / service will be most welcomed by the consumers you are going to target.
If you launch your company too early, your offer in the market may go unnoticed and damage your reputation. If you have not yet found a niche, you have not found a possibility of growth, it is recommended that you should wait a little longer.
If you launch your company too late, your company can subtract novelty from the product / service you are going to offer.
Many times we do not want to launch the product / service to the market until all the variables are controlled, each detail is perfectly resolved and everything is in order. This makes it possible that the right moment has passed us and we do not take advantage of the novelty of our product / service.
