8 Keyword Research Tools That Can Break Your Writer’s Block
You’ll never run out of ideas again
When you’re running out of ideas, it helps to use some tools to break your writer’s block.
These keyword research tools can list hundreds of related words and questions that can work just like a brainstorming session for topics to write about.
Note that while many of these tools can be accessed for free, some would prompt you to register for an account. To access all features, some would require you to choose a paid plan.
For me, however, it’s often enough to use the free version just to give me an inspiration for my next article.
Here are some keyword research tools you can use:
1. BuzzSumo
After entering a keyword or url, BuzzSumo will give you a list of related topics as well as some popular titles with statistics on the number of social media engagement (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Reddit) plus a total engagement score.
There is also an Analysis Report that shows you the number of articles published over a period of time. You can also see tables that reflect the average engagement by network, content types, content length. and day published. The top domains and top pieces of content are also available.
Note that there is a monthly limit for using the tool. When I exceeded the limit, I had to sign up using my Facebook account.
2. Answer The Public
Upon entering a keyword or a topic of your choice, this tool will render the search volume, cost per click, search difficulty and paid difficulty for that word.
Charts will show you the numerous questions people are asking in relation to your keyword. To see certain data like corresponding search volume, you have to unlock it by upgrading your account to PRO. To download the images, you have to create an account and sign in.

3. QuestionsDB
This site focuses on giving you questions related to your keyword search. Up to 50 questions are available even without a paid plan. You don’t even have to register for an account to start using the tool.
4. Free Keyword Generator from ahrefs
This is a very simple and fast free keyword tool. No need to register for an account. You can choose whether you want to search from Google, Bing, Amazon or YouTube. After making a selection, simply enter a word or topic and it will give you the top 100 keyword ideas. But if you would like to see more results, you need to choose a plan.
5. Moz Keyword Explorer
You need to create an account to access this tool. A free account would give you 10 queries per month.
This will give you the monthly search volume, difficulty, organic CTR, keyword suggestions and some SERP analysis
6. Google Keyword Planner
You need to sign in to your Google account first. Take note that you will not create any ads. You will only research for keyword ideas.
This tool will give you numerous keywords with corresponding search volume for the period.
7. Ubersuggest
Unless you create an account here, you will only be limited to 3 searches per day. Upon entering a keyword or a topic of your choice and specifying the language as well as the location you want considered, you will be given a list of relevant keywords will corresponding monthly search volume.
When I tried to use it without creating an account, I could see the results for the top 30 keyword suggestions. For each of those keywords, it will give you the top 10 links with corresponding traffic estimates and social shares. You will also have an idea on the domain’s authority and the number of incoming links.
8. Semrush
This tool will give you the global search volume, keyword difficulty, CPC, and a list of the following relevant words:
- keyword variations
- questions
- related keywords
It has a very detailed SERP analysis feature and can show you a site’s top pages, top subdomains and main organic competitors.
You need to create an account to access this tool. If you’re on a free plan, you are limited to 10 requests per day.
