8 Essential Qualities Of A Leader
Cultivate these qualities to become a leader in any field
Whenever I need inspiration in life, I look up to leaders in different fields. Be it Lincoln, Gandhi, or Martin Luther King. Reading about them and their life motivates me to dream big. In today’s world, leadership is an essential quality to succeed in any field.
There are two kinds of leadership — one is deadly and destructive and another is helpful and constructive. History is filled with both kinds of leaders. For example, Hitler and Napoleon were destructive leaders. They were consumed by personal ambitions which led to their downfall. Conversely, Gandhi and Lincoln adapted constructive leadership. They fought for truth and justice to the people of their countries.
In this article, I will discuss the qualities required for becoming a helpful and constructive leader. These qualities are:
1. Self — Confidence
It is perhaps the most important one. Self — confidence comes from having supreme knowledge in your field. I have written an article about how to cultivate self — confidence. You can check it out for detailed information.
Be so knowledgeable in your field that people can come to you for any problems. People can say, “Go to him. He has the solution to every problem.” Additionally, you should be an excellent orator so that you can explain the solution clearly. He should be the hardest worker in the room.
“Always pursue your best — self.”
2. Self — Control
A leader should have control over his mind and body. Even though, a leader is fearful, he should not show the fear to his men. If a leader shows fear, it is reflected upon his followers. A leader should allow emotions to interfere with his decisions.
3. Walk the Talk
A leader should always follow what he says. Remember, people generally don’t follow the advice, they follow the examples. Show your followers how it should be done rather than telling them how to do it.
“A good leader always leads from the front.”
4. Self — Sacrifice
A good leader should always put his people ahead of himself. He should take care of them and give them all the time.
“A person who takes all the time can’t be a leader.”
He should be able to take the blame when the mission fails and he should give all the credits to his followers when the mission succeeds.
5. Unbiased
A leader should also have a keen sense of justice. He should be able to see what’s right or wrong in any situation. He should not treat people differently. He should have the same punishment for the same mistake or crime. If he fails to deliver unbiased justice, people will stop following him.
6. Prepared for Every Situation
A leader analyzes the problem from all angles and then takes a firm decision. Even after taking the decision, he is aware of the possible outcomes or the obstacle he will face.
A leader closely reads all the obstacles and prepare for them. So when the team faces any hurdle, the leader is always ready with a solution. People might say that he got lucky but they underestimate the work put in by the leader preparing for these hurdles.
“A leader should always think 2 steps ahead of his followers.”
7. Having Courage
A leader should be courageous. Don’t confuse courage with bravery. Bravery means you are not aware of dangers while courage means doing things even after being fearful.
“Bravery is physical and courage is mental.”
8. Know your men
A leader should thoroughly understand his men. He should be aware of their strengths and weaknesses. This is important while dividing a task to accomplish a goal.
If a leader knows his men, he can distribute the tasks in such a way that the goal can be accomplished efficiently. Knowing your men also shows that the leader cares about his men.
In Conclusion
Leadership is not something people are born with. Leadership can be cultivated. Leadership is constant learning. I believe everybody can be a leader if he can cultivate the following qualities:
Self — confidence, self — control, walk the talk, self — sacrificed, unbiased, prepared for every situation, having courage, and know your men.
