Summary

The undefined website outlines a 75 Random Word Drabble Challenge, inviting writers to create a 100-word story based on a daily selected word, with specific guidelines for tagging, linking, and story structure to ensure consistency and community engagement.

Abstract

The undefined website introduces the third iteration of the 75 Random Word Drabble Challenge, where participants are tasked with crafting a complete fictional narrative within a concise limit of 100 words. The challenge emphasizes the importance of including a plot with clear elements of who, what, when, where, and why, and encourages giving characters names to foster reader investment. Writers are instructed to use the daily word as is, with the only alterations allowed being the addition of '-ed' or '-ing'. To maintain organization and recognition, writers must link back to the publication or the random word post and are encouraged to link to another writer's drabble as a form of appreciation. The website also addresses recent changes due to a purge on Medium, advising writers to subscribe for updates since tagging practices are now in question. Additionally, the site provides instructions for tag usage, editorial communication, and story submission times to streamline the publication process and maintain the sanity of the editors.

Opinions

  • The author expresses uncertainty and caution regarding Medium's tagging policy, suggesting a conservative approach to avoid potential violations.
  • There is a clear emphasis on community support and recognition, as evidenced by the suggestion to link to fellow writers' drabbles.
  • The editors' perspective is highlighted, indicating frustration and the need for clear communication from writers, particularly in adhering to tagging rules and not deleting editorial notes.
  • The publisher acknowledges the possibility of mistakes and sets expectations for story publication times, considering the different time zones of the editorial team.
  • The challenge is presented as an opportunity for writers to hone their craft by creating a compelling narrative within strict limitations, thus demonstrating their creative skills.

75 Random Word Drabble Challenge 3/15

The challenge? A complete fiction story in 100 words. One of them randomly selected for the day

Given the recent purge on Medium, I decided to quit tagging the writers for the publication. I have no idea if tagging the writers is a violation, and Medium doesn’t define it, nor did they share with our suspended writers what actions of theirs were suspicious.

If you rely on being tagged and haven’t subscribed to get my emails, you might want to consider subscribing, or every day, around 10 AM Central Time the new word will be at the top of the Fiction Shorts’ homepage.

New this week

Please make sure you include a link to either Fiction Shorts or the random word post. It would be super cool if you would include a link to another writer’s drabble. What a great way to say, “I loved your story!”

ICYMI

We know it’s a limited amount of space, but make sure your story has a plot, a who, what, when, where, and why. And, it helps the reader connect if your character has a name. You want your readers to care. This is the challenge. The reader needs to get it all in 100 words.

The word is the word. The only changes allowed are an ‘-ed’ or ‘-ing’.

Not new, but you’re driving the editors nuts

And, trust me, they’re already on the cliff’s edge. Two of your tags must be Random and Drabble

If an editor leaves a note on your story, do not delete it. After the editor publishes your story, they will dismiss the note. If a different editor is looking at the story upon resubmission, they have no idea what the original editor requested.

Subject to the publisher (that’s me) messing up …

If you submit your story early, it will be scheduled to be published at 7:30 or 8:30 AM (CST) on the appropriate day. (The editors are in different time zones and I don’t think I can set one for the pub.)

If your story is for any word other than the current day, it will be published around 10 PM CST. Our goal is for people to be able to visit the publication and read all of the day’s stories together. That way we see the many different ways people approach the same word.
