7 Ways to Make Money if You Have Great Handwriting

Pretty penmanship might be your new side hustle!

Image belongs to author

I have always loved writing in cursive. In university, I would re-write my notes from classes simply because I loved writing (it was also a great way for me to review my notes and get that info in my brain). I wish I’d thought to monetize that by selling them. In my late teens and twenties, I was a prolific letter writer (I’m aging myself but…ya, there wasn’t any email back then). I’ve been known to write out the lyrics of songs I love — just because I love writing.

It only occurred to me recently that I could make money from my handwriting. I started with some Fiverr gigs and I’m only exploring how lucrative this may be.

Here are some opportunities I’m looking into:

#1 Calligraphy

Learning calligraphy can be fun but it’s also a skill you can put to use. You can use it to make invitations or address cards or in anything that utilizes fancy scripts. Christmas is coming and there are loads of people who hate addressing their cards. You could also create hand made cards, poems, and other items on shops like Etsy or Zazzle.

#2 Create and sell fonts

You could have your own font! And not all fonts are free. The fonts you buy on MyFonts or FontSprings have to be created by someone. You can utilize your handwriting skills by creating unique fonts and make up to 70% per sale. I’ve been watching YouTube videos and there’s some informative videos out there like this one:

#3 Write letters or postcards

Ever heard of someone saying they have to write a letter to Grandma or someone and they wish they could just send an email? Lots of seniors don’t use email or computers at all but they love getting letters. Someone who wanted to send a letter could speak the letter and then send you the audio file to transcribe into a letter.

#4 Handwritten invitations

Many people feel that handwritten invitations for weddings, parties, and other events are more personal. They hate writing them though. Why not offer to do the invitations for them? See #1 — if you know calligraphy, your service will sell even better.

#5 Handwritten Christmas cards

Again, Christmas cards are more personal if they are written by hand. Not everyone has the time to hand write all the cards they want to send out.

#6 Create and handwrite poetry cards

This is especially lucrative if you can craft a poem personalized for the receiver. You can buy blank cards at stationery stores or even dollar stores. Let the buyer tell you about their relationship with the person who is going to get the card, create a poem, and write it in a card.

#7 Create products with unique handwritten quotes

You can turn your handwriting into a graphic that you can put on items that you can sell online. Use some of your favorite quotes or make some up and be even more unique. Mugs, notebooks, and mousepads are are popular items that you can put your own handwriting on.

Tips for selling your handwriting:

If you’re going to make money from your handwriting, there’s a few things I’d suggest:

  1. Use good pens, not boring ballpoint pens. Gel pens can be nice. Brush tip pens are fun and pretty.
  2. Use good paper. If you’re going to charge for things like sending letters, you’d better put it on some nice paper. If it is for a quote, make sure to choose something thick.
  3. If you do a lot of work, start practicing good posture now!
  4. Learn to do a few different kinds of handwriting so clients have choices.
  5. Practice slowing down. It’s habit to rush through it but if you’re getting paid, it’s important not to make mistakes. White out or crossouts are not going to make clients happy!

I’d love to hear from you if you’ve done this! I’m starting with handwritten letters and cards. I’ll let you know how it goes in a month or so!
