7 Up & Coming Medium Publications with Less than 1,000 Followers
Help me add to this list and spread the good word

I’m speaking from experience when I say that it’s hard to start a publication from the ground up. Especially when us editors are literally doing it for free!
However, all of us up-and-coming editors are also doing it for a reason. We have a vision and we want to unite our fellow writers under a common theme.
Why join small publications?
It’s amazing to get in on the ground floor of something great and small publications tend to have loyal readers. In fact, you may even get more views than you might from larger giants.
Case in point: I got more views and reads on an uncurated article published in The Motherload with only 500 followers than I did on a curated article in Entrepreneur’s Handbook with 210K followers.
Without further ado, let’s take a look at these 7 great publications with less than 1,000 followers. Support them with a follow and join as a writer if it suits you.
In alphabetical order:
Alternative Perspectives
I first saw this publication through a few posts that my good friend E.S. Yates wrote. It seems like a great place for your unique stories.
Globetrotters
Warren Patterson was one of my first followers on Medium so of course, I have to support his publication Globetrotters. It’s a great place to share travel experiences. Aren’t we all craving a little travel in our lives, even if it’s by vicariously living through others?
Mended Hearts
Lena Quinn just started this publication when it was tough for her to find a home for her stories about heartbreak and healing. I love the concept!
Modern Women
Of course, I have to give a shout-out to the publication that I started. We’re eager to grow and support as many female writers as we can. We include a variety of topics and offer a super-unique ‘self-promotion’ section.
Shorties but Goodies
I love Shortform stories. There are some great publications out there that feature shortform but I really like Liberty Forrest, Author’s positive take on it. I found this publication by reading a shortform story by Slow train.
The Motherload
I’m all about catchy names for publications and Erin Hendriksen did an amazing job choosing the name ‘The Motherload’. It’s the perfect place for all of your motherhood stories.
What Is Love To You?
I write a lot of relationship stories so I’m always on the lookout for great publications in this category. I love this one that Robert Ralph created.
Additions from the comments:
- I love Susie Kearley’s writing. She’s started a great publication called Britain and Ireland
There you have it! Please help me grow this list by sharing other small publications that you know of in the comments. I’ll update this article with your additions.
With love, Megan
