7 Quick Steps To Help You Escape Your Comfort Zone (Even When You’re Scared Or Nervous)
Are you the type of person who continues to NOT take action to improve their life, even though you’re unsatisfied at how things are going?
Do you let opportunities pass you by? Do you often choose to stay at home, when there is cool stuff going on outside?
Are you letting fear hold you back from living your best life?
If so, read on because I’ve listed seven quick exercises that helped transform me from a passive bystander to ruthless action-taker.
1. Think About The Best Thing That Could Happen
If you publish that Medium article or YouTube video today, it could be blessed by the algorithm and kickstart your content creation career.
If you go to that party, you could bump into the future love of your life.
Take some time to think about the best thing that happened when you took this action before. This will inspire you to consider that it could happen again.
Also, when you take action with this positive mindset, you’re more likely to manifest a good outcome.
2. Briefly Consider The Worst Thing That Could Realistically Happen
Whatever it is, you’ll probably survive.
If it’s so bad, it’ll probably help you grow stronger.
Then, even if it completely sucks, it’ll eventually be over.
3. Remember The Last Time You Didn’t Take Action — And What Could Have Happened
There’s no way to tell what could have happened if you talked to that last woman or applied for that last job opportunity, but isn’t that the worst feeling?
You’ll have to live the rest of your life not knowing what could have happened, plus you gain no personal growth because you didn’t even try.
This is the path to a boring uneventful life.
If you want to live an exciting memorable life, it’s time to start taking more shots.
4. Commit To Something Small
If you’re feeling resistance towards a task, commit to it for an unintimidating amount of time.
You can reply to five emails. You can write for 10 minutes. You can go to the party for half an hour.
Often, once you start, you’ll get into the flow and want to keep going for longer.
5. Follow The Five Second Rule
When you decide you want to do something, count backwards and start walking towards it before you hit zero.
This is an effective psychological trick popularised by Mel Robbins, which could skyrocket your productivity all by itself.
It works because it helps you bypass the hesitation that allows your brain to talk you out of amazing but scary opportunities.
6. Surround Yourself With Other Action Takers
One of the most popular ideas in the self-help community is: “You become the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”
If you’re always hanging out with lazy unmotivated friends, you might find it easier to justify not taking steps to improve your own life.
That’s why you should surround yourself with other action-takers who are excited to take chances and try new things.
When you witness how their lives improve, you’ll often be more inspired to follow their lead.
7. Think About The End Credits
I don’t want to get too dark here…
But there are people who grow to become old, sick or disabled, without having even tried to create the exciting life they really wanted.
This sounds like a nightmare to me.
So, whenever I’m feeling too scared or lazy to do something new and exciting, I picture myself as an old man looking back on the younger, fitter version of myself.
This old man will surely be screaming, telling me not to waste my youth!
It’s a kooky exercise, but maybe it will work for you.
After all, no-one lives their final moments wishing they’d slept more, stayed inside more or watched more TV.
