You can be that person.

Do you see people around you that are succeeding in their chosen career? Ever feel a bit envious of them? That’s fine because you can succeed too. You don’t have to stay where you are.

I’ve listed 7 qualities of people who reach their dreams to help you get there too.

They take themselves seriously.

There’s that old saying that you should fake it until you make it — and that’s true. When you start pursuing your chosen career, you may suffer from imposter syndrome. You fear that if you say you are pursuing your career path, people won’t believe you. They’ll think you’re not good enough. But that’s only fear. Fear will throw a wet blanket on your dreams. Don’t let it.

Many people may discourage you, but it’s more about them than you. Lots of people give well-meaning advice, that doesn’t serve you. You can listen to what they have to say, but you definitely don’t have to follow it.

Successful people take themselves seriously. Even if they’re working a day job, a writer will call themselves a writer. They will believe that’s who they are. You need to believe you already are the person you want to become. The reality will follow.

They prioritize their passion, no matter what.

Successful people prioritize what they want to do. They don’t let anything get in the way of pursuing what they love to do.

Their chosen career takes priority, and they’ll often work late into the night after working a full-time day job to make it happen. This means pushing other activities aside. Netflix can wait. Their friends can wait.

When you start treating your career like it’s important to you, changes will start happening. Eventually, the day will come when you’ll be able to pursue your passion full time.

They steer their own career and follow their unique vision

Successful people don’t follow a path others have set before them, they create their own path. They have a unique vision for what they want and follow their intuition to help steer a path to success. Being a follower in life gets people nowhere. They need to muster the strength and courage to follow their dreams.

Is there a path out there that you are afraid to take? Sometimes stepping out of your comfort zone will set you on the path to success. Nothing great happens without some risk.

My fear of flying almost stopped me from going on a dream vacation. I fought my fear and stepped out of my comfort zone. When I arrived at my destination, I had the vacation of my dreams and met a famous musician I admired. When you face your fears, wonderful things happen.

They put in the hours.

Even if they are working a day job, the successful ones are spending thousands of hours on the side pursuing their passion. They don’t make excuses that they’ll wait until they aren’t tired, or too busy to do it. They will put their passion before their other tasks, even if it means putting off other important things to make their dream happen.

I saw a YouTube video with Finneas and Billie Eilish where they showed how many thousands of hours they had worked on their recording. Elish did several takes on each vocal until she found the sound she wanted.

Successful people work hard and put in the hours to reach a level of expertise. If someone wants something bad enough, that’s what they do.

It’s time to get focused and put in those serious hours to achieve your goals. Your career depends upon it.

Giving up is not an option.

When people strive for success it’s a given that there will always be obstacles. Many people give up the second they have a problem. Perseverance is the true key to success.

I know a talented songwriter who became so discouraged by all the technical difficulties recording his songs, he stopped trying for years. Now he’s finally back, and putting his heart and soul into it, and achieving things, because he stopped letting obstacles chase him away from the career he loves.

Don’t let giving up be an option for you. The reason success doesn’t come to just anyone is because most people do give up. Don’t let that person be you.

They strategically plan a course of action and have a backup plan in place.

It’s crucial to create a business plan when starting a career. People can’t get to their destination without a map, or in some rare cases, sheer luck. A plan will help guide them when they are hitting obstacles that seem insurmountable.

One of the things I admire about my successful friend is that she always has a backup plan no matter what she does. She always plans for obstacles, and what she’ll do if she encounters them. That’s inspired me to get better at planning.

Successful people plan every detail. And if Plan A doesn’t work, there’s always Plan B or even C.

Always have your plan B in place.

They learn from people who have succeeded in their field.

There are numerous stories of successful people starting under the protective wings of a mentor they admired. Sometimes that’s just the thing to kickstart their career.

Bill Gates reads several books a year, to contribute to his vast knowledge. There’s a library near you that has a wealth of books that could help with your career and life.

Other people take college courses or earn certificates to keep current in their fields. It’s always important to be ahead of the competition.

Look around you at the people you admire in your life. They may have something to teach you on your road to success. Reach out and see if they’ll give you some valuable input. They may give you insight into solving a problem you are experiencing.

Takeaway

With these 7 qualities above, you can get started on the path to success in the career you love, instead of settling for what you don’t want in your life. You don’t have to stay where you are. You can reach your dreams.
