Humor is in the eye of the beholder. So, to write a piece about the funniest sci-fi films, I considered a shortlist of all my favorite comedy movies with space themes.

This initial list included dozens of funny sci-fi space flicks. I had to trim that down to get to my personal favorites’ top seven list.

Buckle up and strap on your reading glasses, folks, and get ready to flashback to seven of the funniest science fiction movies about Space — guaranteed to make you laugh your head off.

Explorers (1985)

Another cult classic, a great deal of Explorers charm, resides in the charismatic trio of protagonists Ben (Ethan Hawke), Wolfgang (River Phoenix, and Darren (Jason Presson).

What starts like a quest-type adventure film rapidly evolves into a comedy on board the alien ship with an assortment of goofy, laugh-induction scenes.

The alien crew obsessed with terrestrial TV is good fun thorough the movie.

Sci-fi fans will enjoy the references to science fiction movies and shows we love like Star Wars.

Spaceballs (1987)

Spaceballs is a comedy movie that was released in 1987. The movie, directed by Mel Brooks, is well-known for its comedic wit and well-timed jokes. The humor in this film derives from the use of satirical references to popular movies of the time.

The funniest aspect of Spaceballs is its satirical references to other films like Star Wars (1977) and Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981).

These movies provide the background from where Spaceballs spawns its narrative arc.

Lone Star is a rogue space pilot cruising the galaxy with his furry sidekick Barf, who finds himself set on a quest to save a princess Vespa from the vicious Adventures' evil clasp of the Spaceballs ruthless enforcer, Dark Helmet.

Ring a bell?

Mars Attacks! (1996)

Mars Attacks! is a sci-fi horror-comedy film directed by Tim Burton. This is one of the funniest movies ever made because it has plentiful witty, darkly humorous scenes.

Throughout this movie, many funny moments make me laugh aloud every single time.

However, there are also times when the viewer may be spooked. The mixture of these two emotions makes Mars Attacks! one of the darkest and quirky sci-fi movies about space.

Tim Burton was able to entice the audience through dark humor and slapstick comedy. These types of humor are very effective because they involve violence or unexpected events that provoke laughter from the audience.

Likewise, he created horror in this movie through numerous frightening scenes that evoke fear in viewers and provide relief when the scene ends with a spoof.

Galaxy Quest (1999)

Galaxy Quest is one of the funniest movies ever made, and it has one of the best casts ever seen on screen for this genre.

The movie is a parody of Star Trek and other science fiction shows, starring Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Tony Shalhoub ("Monk").

The script follows a group of actors who starred on an extremely successful TV series and, unable to get new roles, survive with the same characters at fan conventions.

In the middle of one of these conventions, aliens viewing the episode ask these actors for help in defending them from an invasion by another civilization.

Muppets in Space (1999).

The first Muppet Movie (1979) is a classic and will always be one of my favorite movies.

The narrative provides an interesting commentary on the human condition. For instance, one of the main themes is the value of family and friendship.

Hence, behind the humor, we can find plenty of meaningful life lessons to guide us in our daily lives.

The movie is a lot of fun, and it's not focused on the muppets as much as the first muppets movie.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005)

This is not a film for all kinds of audiences. An adaptation of Douglas Adams’ novel of the same name, the film directed by Garth Jennings tries to grasp the provocative style of Adams’s book and the author's use of nonsense and irony.

Buckle up and strap on your reading glasses, folks, and get ready to flashback to seven of the funniest science fiction movies about Space — guaranteed to make you laugh your head off.

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

Guardians of the Galaxy is undoubtedly one of the best comedy science fiction movies released recently.

The genre seems to be losing a great deal of traction since the beginning of the new millennium.

Some people might think that this movie is all about space, space battles, and some comic relief, but it's not at all like that.

It's more than that: It's about overcoming your fears, finding your family in unlikely places, and fighting for what you believe in no matter what others say.
