7 Little-Known Facts About China
Knowing the Friendly Dragon on the Rise

1) GDP and Income
In 2020, China’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) exceeded 100 Trillion Yuan (US$16 Trillion) for the first time, and residents’ income also doubled that of 2010.
2) Largest Market
China is the world’s largest market which also has the most potential, with 1.4 Billion people, and of which more than 400 million are in the middle-income group.
3) Investment Climate and Ecosystem
China’s stable social, political and economic situation, as well as various institutional advantages, provide an attractive conducive ecosystem for enterprises and businesses to invest and thrive.
4) Poverty Eradication
China has lifted 100 million people out of poverty by 2020. Poverty is defined by China as anyone in rural areas earning less than about US$2.30 a day (adjusted for inflation). This Chinese national benchmark is slightly higher than the World Bank’s US$1.90 a day used to define global poverty. This was fixed in 2010 and the Chinese look at not just income but also living conditions, healthcare, and education. In 1990 there were more than 750 million people in China living below the international poverty line — about ⅔ of the population. By 2012, that had fallen to fewer than 90 million, and by 2016, the World Bank confirmed that it had fallen to 7.2 million people (0.5% of the population). Overall, more than 745 million fewer Chinese people, when compared with 30 years ago, are lifted from living in extreme poverty.
5) Muslim Population
There are about 39,000 mosques for about 25 million Muslims in China. Of the 55 ethnic minorities groups, 10 are predominantly Muslim. They make up about 20% of the total ethnic minorities in China. The Hui people are the largest Muslim group in China, followed by the Uyghurs. The Hui and the Uygur ethnic groups make up about 90% of the total Muslim population in China. About 50% in Xinjiang Province are Muslims, with the largest Muslim population in China. Muslims in China are mostly concentrated in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Qinghai Province, Gansu Province, Yunnan Province; with other Muslims in Tianjin Municipality, Beijing Municipality, Henan Province, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and Hebei Province. Muslims however can be found almost everywhere in every Chinese city. The Uygur minority group population, purportedly targets of genocide, grew at twice the rate (25%) of the overall Xinjiang population and way higher than the 2% growth rate of the majority Han group. The Uygur population in Xinjiang increased by more than 2.5 million over 8 years from 2010–2018.
6) Belt Road Initiative (BRI)
In 2013, China announced the estimated US$1 Trillion creation of the 21st century Silk Road Program, termed the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), as a continuation and acceleration of her ongoing investments around the world. It currently includes infrastructure projects such as: roads and highways, trains, energy infrastructure (power stations, wind farms, oil pipelines etc.), ports, extractive industry infrastructure (mines, logging), and information technology infrastructure. By December 2021, 142 countries had signed a cooperation Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) agreement with China to join the framework of the BRI.
7) Modern Industrial Chain
China is the only country to have an independent and complete industrial system, according to the industrial classifications of the United Nations (UN). It has 666 industrial categories, 41 major industrial categories, and 207 medium industrial categories.
