7 Ingredients Your Curated Newsletter Needs to Drive More Engagement

The fast track to growing your audience

Newsletters are all the buzz in 2022.

From informing people about their brands to curating information from other Creators, running Newsletters is easier than you think.

Truth is, websites such as Swapstack exist to pay Creators for sponsoring brand advertisements on their Newsletter.

Heck, look at that. You can build a “side-hustle” running a Newsletter.

If you’re someone who wishes to run a Newsletter but has no clue about what goes in it, what drives more clicks or more engagement, or what makes people Subscribe, then you’ve landed in the right place.

In this blog, I’ll take you through the 7 Ingredients that you should include in your Newsletter to get more Subscribers and engagement.

Let’s dive right in.

#1 Blogs

I’ve seen several Creators embed links to their blogs. In fact, most Newsletters are just repurposed blog posts.

You can just use your blogs posts in your Newsletters or something more creative.

Curate blog links from other Creators in your niche. People like variety.

Insert an extract from your relevant blog post, hyperlink the last text to the entire blog and embed links to other blogs below it.

Make sure you don’t overwhelm your readers. A maximum of 2–3 embeds is enough.

There’s nothing wrong with having entire blog posts as Newsletters.

But think about it.

Why would people bother reading your Newsletter when they can just read the blog.

Give them something more than just a single blog

Blogs in a similar niche but different topics will hook their interest and make them come back to your Newsletter for future issues.

Next, let’s look at how Tweets can help you grow your audience.

#2 Tweets

Tweets are another one of those ingredients that appeal to the eyes.

With simple text and no background, one can barely ignore looking at them.

And that’s exactly what Creators have been using in their Newsletters.

With 2–3 tweet embeds, you can add a unique element that can help you increase your following on Twitter as well.

But I have a better suggestion. Heard about Twitter threads?

Tweet threads are 10x more effective than simple tweets when it comes to growing an audience.

So I’ll suggest that you embed Tweet thread hooks that’ll actually intrigue readers and make them click just like it happens on Twitter.

In other words, this increases your chances of getting more engagements right from your Newsletter.

So, be it your tweet, tweet thread or some other creator’s tweets — make sure to embed them in your Newsletter.

Next, let’s look at how Podcast episodes can boost your authority.

#3 Podcasts

The Podcasting industry has been on the surge for the past few years.

With over 100 million Podcast listeners, imagine how effective can Podcast episodes turn out for your newsletter.

But I’m not telling you to launch your Podcast for the sake of gathering listeners from your Newsletter.

Curate relevant Podcast episodes and embed them in your Newsletter.

Make sure not to exceed 2–3 episode embeds.

This keeps you from overwhelming subscribers.

Embedding such episodes makes your subscribers look up to you as someone who knows their stuff.

Now, let’s look at how Videos can make your Newsletter look expressive.

#4 Videos

Videos are the most popular form of content consumed by users today.

Be it Reels, YouTube shorts or Tiktok videos. People are in love with them.

So why not leverage them for your Newsletter and make people stay longer.

The best fact about embedding videos is that the person watching it isn’t taken away on any other platform.

They can watch an entire 20 min video right inside your Newsletter.

This makes them come back more.

As usual, embed 2–3 relevant videos in your newsletter.

They’ll look up to you as a person who know’s their stuff.

#5 LinkedIn Posts

LinkedIn posts work great with practical content.

In other words, if you’re looking to offer your subscribers something impactful and practical, go ahead and embed posts from Industry leaders that cover relevant topics with high engagement rates.

LinkedIn posts may contain someone’s insightful tips, techniques, experience or opportunities. And some people have a knack for these.

On the other side, you get to increase your LinkedIn following along with promoting your offer.

#6 Books

A lot of people consider books as their lifeline. Such people will never regret exceeding their budget to their hands on a fresh piece.

Your job as a Newsletter Creator is to become the middleman.

Amazon is the perfect place to grab links of books and link it to the book titles on your Newsletter.

Talking of Amazon, you can make money passively by becoming a part of Amazon’s affiliate program.

Register for the affiliate program, search for your book name and grab your affiliate link.

Mention the book names with a small summary in your Newsletter and link your book title to your affiliate link.

This means that if someone buys your recommended book, you receive an affiliate commission on the purchase.

Let’s move on the next ingredient that is known to do the charm.

#7 Quotes

A lot of Creators love including quotes at the beginning or the end of their Newsletters.

Quotes act like a garnish on the entire Newsletter. A subtle few words that can take the reader in deep thought.

The author of “Atomic Habits”, James Clear, runs a weekly newsletter that literally consists of only quotes.

Go ahead and include a quote or two of a famous personality in your Newsletter. Your newsletter might feel incomplete without it.

That’s a Wrap

Newsletters can be an amazing source of building an audience as a Creator.

To summarize, here are all the ingredients I’ve covered :

  • Blogs
  • Tweets
  • Podcasts
  • Videos
  • LinkedIn Posts
  • Books
  • Quotes

A lot of Creators keep their Newsletters free while others charge subscribers on a monthly basis. The choice is yours.

If your Newsletter can provide the kind of quality that people will gladly pay for, there’s nothing stopping you from making a recurring income out of it.
