JOURNAL ENTRIES

7 Days of Thank You Notes to The Day

Because noticing the intricate details in life, the little things that lift us can inspire so much else besides.

A week in the life of giving daily thanks, taken from my journal. Beginning every sentence with

I am thankful for…

Sunday

I am thankful for the sun shining in the sky on this warm October day, feeling the sense of summer hanging on until its very last chance, before the sun sinks too low in the sky to give much more warmth.

I am thankful for Sunday family Skype calls, traditional since the beginning of the first lockdown; I still haven’t seen my sister in person since then, for the world shut down while she was living in the Philippines, after which she managed to move her family out to their house in France five months on, and neither of us has crossed any borders since.

I am thankful that we have kept in closer contact as a result of the forced distance.

I am thankful to be able to have conversations with my family about everything under the sun — from keeping ourselves in the best physical health, financial health, and the best inner peace, to giggling about the ridiculous antics of our pets and taking the mickey out of our father’s struggles with technology.

I am thankful to hear the giggles of my little boy when he hears my sister exclaim at the stench of her dog’s farts. Every time.

Monday

I am thankful for morning commitments that get me up and energised every morning: my daily commitment to show up live in my Facebook Journaling community before seven; getting my son up, dressed, breakfasted, and into school on time, and walking Ginger Rogers, my newly-adopted dog.

I am thankful for another beautiful day of sunshine with little wind, meaning that Ginger and I could bask dreamily in the warmth and take our walk on the high ridge above Widecombe-in-the-Moor, where my son attends school. I am thankful for my increasing stamina since Ginger came to live with us, meaning that we venture a little higher and a little further each time we walk these steep paths.

I am thankful for having a working life that I love so that Monday is a welcome return to routine, productivity, and creativity. I am blessed.

Tuesday

I am thankful for unexpectedly having my morning dog walk with one of my good friends — Alice, and her toddler, Flo. I am thankful that some weeks ago I invited her to walk with us when she had time to do so, and this morning she did.

I am thankful for the cold, crisp, clear air of the morning, the sun still shining yet drifting further from us, the autumn damp upon the spongey moorland earth, and the warm conversation. I am thankful to have these moments to catch up with my friends, even though it doesn’t happen so often in these busy days of parenting, working, and everything else on top.

I am grateful that these daily morning walks make me feel so alive every single day. I am alive.

Wednesday

I am thankful for a slower morning, more time to focus on the things I need to get done — sometimes it feels frustrating that I can never begin ticking off my to-do list until everyone else’s needs are met, but on Wednesday mornings I always have that freedom, for I am let off getting the kids ready for school and my day begins productively.

I am thankful for a feeling that is washing over me, telling me that everything is okay; everything is being taken care of and I do not need to worry about the next steps in my life — this is not my usual state and I am thankful for a different perspective this morning.

I am thankful for a change in the temperature; the cold of autumn is beginning and, although I am not a fan of winter, I still appreciate all the seasons, for spring and summer just wouldn’t be the same without them. We are blessed.

Thursday

I am thankful for bright colours all around: the glaringly blue sky; the green tinged with yellow, orange, and red of the trees; the painted outer walls shining brighter than ever in the sunlight, and the yet summery colours that folks are still dressing in.

I am thankful because I am healthy and strong enough to enjoy these beautiful autumn days, all day every day, because once that wasn’t the case — for many years, for an unknown reason, I struggled with energy slumps and falling prey to coughs and colds easily. I am thankful that I rarely feel sick anymore.

I am thankful because I know that today is another chance to grow within, to learn, to help someone, and to lift someone else. Giving kindness is powerful.

Friday

I am thankful for creative energy exploding out of me as I have never known before. I am thankful that I delivered my fifth and last live video of the week in my journaling community and had written an entire story from start to finish by 7:30 in the morning.

I am thankful that I gave myself today to be outside walking in nature and spending time with my father. I am thankful that I can take this time because I am my own boss, my own accountability partner, and my own source of motivation.

I am thankful that I can motivate myself daily, at least at the moment, although I know that slumps do happen, and they are okay too. I am only human.

Saturday

I am thankful for the weekend, for I can get up when I like and I am not limited by time, except for the fact that I still only have twenty-four hours per day, just as I did yesterday and the day before and…every day before that.

I am thankful that time warps itself in strange ways and perceptions turn time into different sized packages — sometimes small and confined, other times stretched wide like giant pizza dough in the making. I am thankful that twenty-four hours never feels the same from one day to the next.

I am thankful that I wore sandals and a sleeveless top today — the opportunity to feel those summer vibes this late in the year is rare, and I will lap it all up now because the change in weather is coming any day now. Gratitude for the here and now, because tomorrow is never promised.
