7 Brutal Life Lessons That You May Not Want To Hear (But Need To Accept)
“Life is hard and then you die.”
“Life is hard and then you die”, someone once told me.
And while I’m not sure who that someone was, they were definitely onto something. Life is full of hardships and challenges that can leave us feeling beaten down and defeated.
But what if we looked at those challenges as opportunities to learn and grow? What if we saw them as brutal life lessons that we need to accept in order to become better, stronger people?
Here are seven brutal life lessons that you may not want to hear, but definitely need to accept.
#1 (Un-)Inspired?
“You often feel tired, not because you’ve done too much, but because you’ve done too little of what sparks a light in you.” — Alexander Den Heijer
You’re not lazy, you’re just uninspired.
We all have those moments where we feel like we can’t get out of bed, let alone take on the day. But more often than not, it’s not because we’re physically exhausted from doing too much. It’s because we’re mentally and emotionally drained from doing things that don’t inspire us.
How to apply it:
The next time you’re feeling lazy, ask yourself what it is that you really want to be doing. If the answer doesn’t come to you immediately, try brainstorming a list of things that make you feel happy and fulfilled. Once you have that list, choose one thing and take actionable steps towards making it happen.
#2 Face yourself
“It’s not finding yourself that’s hard; it’s facing yourself that is.” — Alexander Den Heijer
This quote is all about self-awareness. It’s easy to go through life without really thinking about who we are and what we want out of it. But when we take the time to stop and reflect on ourselves, we often realize that there are things about ourselves that we don’t like.
How to apply it:
The next time you’re feeling lost or uncertain, take a step back and ask yourself some tough questions. What are your values? What do you want to achieve in life? What are your biggest fears? Answering these questions can be difficult, but it’s a necessary part of discovering who you are and what you need to do to be happy.
#3 Acceptance or change?
“The eternal tension between what is and what ought to be either leads to frustration or transformation. The choice is yours.” — Alexander Den Heijer
You can either accept the reality of a situation or you can try to change it.
How to apply it:
If there’s something in your life that you’re not happy with, don’t just accept it — try to change it. It may be difficult, but it’s worth it if it means achieving your goals and living a happier life.
#4 What’s worth living for?
“The reason many people suffer is not that life is too tough; it’s that they haven’t found something worth living for.” — Alexander Den Heijer
Many people suffer because they haven’t found something that makes their life worth living.
How to apply it:
If you’re not happy with your life, ask yourself what you can do to make it more meaningful. Find something that you’re passionate about and make it your life’s mission. You’ll be much happier and fulfilled if
#5 Diverge
“Getting to know a diverse group of people leads to a better understanding of yourself.” — Alexander Den Heijer
The more you interact with people from different backgrounds, the better you’ll understand your own identity.
How to apply it:
Make an effort to meet new people and learn about their cultures. This will help you develop a more nuanced view of yourself and the world around you.
#6 Seek discomfort
“Most people fear change because change brings challenges and challenges bring discomfort. People don’t like discomfort, because they are attached to the way things are. Comfort is addictive. It leads to laziness and inaction. It slowly dulls the spirit. It makes us stop growing. Change may bring challenges, but with every challenge comes an opportunity to grow and evolve.” — Alexander Den Heijer
Most people avoid change because it is often accompanied by challenges that can be uncomfortable. However, comfort is addictive and can lead to laziness and a lack of growth. Change brings opportunities for growth and evolution.
How to apply it:
When you are presented with a new challenge, embrace it as an opportunity to grow. Embrace change and don’t let comfort keep you from evolving.
#7 Embrace hardships
“If we have something to aim for, then the unavoidable struggle will have a sense of meaning to it. Hardship stretches us and enables us to realise our potential. This is how we grow. We don’t grow without pressure. But if we are unable to find meaning in hardship; we just wither. Do we see hardship as a meaningless way to make us suffer, or do we see it as a meaningful way to make us stronger?” — Alexander Den Heijer
Life is full of hardships, but it’s how you perceive them that makes all the difference.
How to apply it:
Try to see hardships as opportunities for growth. Embrace them as a chance to become stronger and wiser. Don’t let them defeat you, let them make you better.
