Opinions
The author believes "Walk Hard" to be the pinnacle of parody movies, suggesting it effectively ended the musician biopic genre with its satirical take.
"Airplane!" is fondly remembered by the author for its absurd humor and for being the first video rented for their new VCR, despite not understanding the jokes as a child.
"Spaceballs" is recognized for its absurdity, particularly in the "When will then be now?" scene, and for its legal ability to parody without financial obligation to the original works it mocks.
"Kung-Pow Enter The Fist" is appreciated for its unique approach to parody, inserting new footage into an existing martial arts film, with the fart scene being a highlight.
"Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping" is described as underrated and a satirical take on popstars like Justin Bieber, with the wolf proposal scene singled out for praise.
"Kentucky Fried Movie" is noted for its sketch comedy format and the inclusion of risqué humor, with the "Big Jim Slade" scene mentioned as a standout.
"Scary Movie" is acknowledged for its spoofs of horror films, with the basketball scene from the sequel and the "Tootsie Pop" bedroom scene from the first movie being particularly memorable.
"Hot Shots Part Deux" is lauded for surpassing its predecessor, with the kickboxing match scene cited as an example of its superior humor.
"The Naked Gun" is celebrated for its continuous stream of laughs and the iconic "That’s how my Grandfather died" joke.
"Blazing Saddles" is recognized for its bold commentary on racism, with the campfire fart scene being historically notable in film history.
The author expresses that the best scene in "Airplane!" is when Rex Kramer arrives at the airport, reflecting the chaotic nature of airports during that era.
The author's personal connection to the genre is evident, as they share how these movies have impacted them since childhood and how their appreciation for certain jokes has evolved over time.
The Best Parody Movies of All Time And The Funniest Scene In Them
A parody movie is a spoof of an existing movie or genre. A comedy is anything funny. Spoof movies are based on existing movies. It’s easier to get Hollywood financers to finance something that’s proven to make money.
Best of all because it’s satire it’s protected under free speech by the U.S. constitution. Mel Brooks didn’t give Lucasfilms a penny for making Spaceballs.
The first parody movie I watched was Airplane! It was the first video my dad rented for our new VCR. I remember something about a Turkish prison, not understanding the jokes, and my mom yelling at my dad for getting it whenever boobs were on the screen.
I loved it.
I’ve since seen almost every spoof their is. Even the terrible ones. For this list I wanted to show my favorite scenes from my favorite spoof movies of all time. These are the top ten spoof movies of all time and their best scene.
10. Spaceballs — 1987
President Scroob! Salute! The best scene might be the intro where the spaceship that’s a mile long flies past the camera. That clip is 10 minutes long and I just told you everything that happens.
The funniest clip is the “When will then be now?” scene. This has to be one of the most ridiculously stupid ideas ever filmed. It’s so absurd and existential. Somehow it worked.
9. Kung-Pow Enter The Fist — 2002
One of the best jokes in this movie was the names of the characters. Wimp Lo, Master Do, Woah (with three boobs) and of course, Betty.
It’s not really a satire, more like an evolution of Mystery Science Theater 3000. They took footage from the 1976 Hong Kong martial arts film Tiger & Crane Fists and shot additional material that was added into the film.
The Cow fight scene is epic, but looks pretty awful by today’s standards. The best scene is the fart scene. I don’t think I will ever watch the Master Tang Flashback scene and not laugh till it hurts. Poor Dog.
8. Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping — 2016
Style Boys for life! This criminally underrated and already forgotten masterpiece isn’t a spoof of one movie. It’s a satire of popstars but mostly Justin Beiber. This is my go-to movie when I need a laugh.
One of my favorite scenes is when they explain what each of the fifty persons working for Conner B Real do. There's another great scene where Conner kills a giant Queen Bee with a blowtorch but the camera’s weren’t running because he was crying. However, the wolf proposal scene with Seal is on a different level. Good old screwball comedy.
7. Kentucky Fried Movie — 1977
This sketch comedy movie isn’t always a spoof. But the feature is a spoof of kung-fu movies.
I wanted to show you Catholic High School Girls in Trouble but it’s age restricted. The stuntman bit is funny with how over the top inappropriate it is. I can’t even talk about it it’s so offensive. If I posted it someone would get the wrong idea.
The Big Jim Slade part of the Wonderful World of Sex sketch isn’t age restricted, so lets go with that. If you Haven’t seen Kentucky Friend Movie, do yourself a favor and find the whole scene. Better yet watch the whole thing. There’s a few jokes no one under 40 will get but there’s still lots to like.
6. Scary Movie — 2000
Scary Movie one and two are neck in neck in humor. There’s bigger stars in part 2 but it loses something being more polished and using established actors besides the Wayans brothers. Part 2’s best scene is the basketball scene spoofing a Nike commercial popular at the time. Totally absurd and gratuitous.
But the reason one is better than two is the Tootsie Pop bedroom scene. This is the funniest scene ever in my opinion. It’s age restricted for a reason, it’s so nasty. Anna Farris is a legend.
5. Hot Shots Part Deux — 1993
Hot Shots Part Deux is a rare sequel that’s better than the original. The first one was Top Gun, so the logical order would be Rambo next.
This movie is silly. It doesn’t take itself serious at all and is the goofiest movie on this list. There’s tons of great scenes and lines in this movie. But the kickboxing match always cracks me up. Especially when the crowd starts chanting for sprinkles.
4. The Naked Gun — 1988
From the files of the spoof television show Police Squad, The Naked Gun. I think this movie has the most laughs in it and also some of the biggest one.
The best scene in this movie uses a joke I’ve been using since I saw this. And it still works. Anytime you see someone doing something dumb or someone gets killed in a movie in a crazy way, say to the person you are with, “That’s how my Grandfather died.”
3. Blazing Saddles — 1974
This movie could not be made today, it’s a movie about equality. But to spoof racism, it’s incredibly racist.
My uncle has his recording studio friend isolate just the sound from this part in 1980. Every time I saw him when I was a kid I’d ask to hear the fart tape. I don’t know if this is the first audible fart in a movie, but I’m pretty sure this was the first fart scene ever.
2. Airplane! — 1980
I think it’s hilarious but my god this scene is terrible. I can’t believe the censors at the time allowed this in the movie. I can not believe what is and isn’t permissible in society these days. I can’t call it the best but this line is legendary.
The best scene is when Rex Kramer gets to the airport. This scene hit hard when this movie came out. Airports were like bus stations back then. Security was lax and there were new cults arriving every day. Robert Stack house was 61 when he filmed this. That’s not a stuntman doing that flip.
1. Walk Hard — 2007
Whenever I make a list of movies like this, I Google similar lists. Part to make sure I’m not writing something that’s already been done. The real reason I do it to make sure I don’t miss any obvious movies like Mr. Star Wars and editor for Fanfare Eric Pierce, who forgot the Ewok movies when ranking every Star Wars movie.
The thing that’s unusual about the other lists I saw is they all had a different film listed for their number one and they all had valid points for their choices. Nobody had Walk Hard as number one. For most it’s not even in the top ten. But here’s why Walk Hard is the best spoof movie ever:
It killed an entire genre.
Hollywood had been on a making movies out of musicians lives kick. The studios had developed a formula that work that was applied to the movies Ray, Walk The Line, La Bamba, and The Buddy Holly Story.
Walk Hard mocked musician biopics so hard there hasn’t been one using that formula since. There’s a three or four year gap after this movie was released before any major music biopic was released. I don’t think any other spoof movie can claim that.
Also this movie is front to back hilarious. Especially the way it mocks every musican turning to drugs then quitting drugs. Mostly mocking the scene in the movie Ray. Maybe it’s funnier to me because I’ve kicked dope. I’m not sure.
When I was a kid my friend would ask why I always laughed the hardest at the little stupid things and didn’t laugh for the things everyone else thought was funny. I didn’t know the answer.
Today Jeff Kimotek is the creator and executive producer of The Masked Singer and I’m writing stories for Medium so he might be right. What do you think? Do you agree with the scenes and the order? Leave a comment and let me know.
