Summary

A new study shows that ChatGPT has led to a decrease in job opportunities and earnings for creative freelancers, particularly graphic designers and copywriters, as it replaces traditional human tasks and reduces demand for certain skills.

Abstract

The advent of generative artificial intelligence (AI) has triggered a seismic shift in the creative industry, with AI models like ChatGPT replacing traditional human tasks and reducing demand for certain skills. A study by researchers from Washington University, NYU, and Harvard, based on data from Upwork, reveals that ChatGPT has led to a noticeable decrease in job opportunities and earnings for creative freelancers, particularly graphic designers and copywriters. The study found a 2% fall in monthly job acquisition and a 5.2% drop in monthly earnings post-ChatGPT. These adverse effects are seen across all skill levels, indicating that ChatGPT is replacing human tasks and leading to less demand for certain skills. The study suggests that creative freelancers should embrace AI as a tool and continuously improve their capabilities to achieve extraordinary innovation and artistic breakthroughs.

Bullet points

  • The study is based on data from Upwork and focuses on how ChatGPT influences creative roles, particularly graphic designers and copywriters.

The days of arguing about whether the advent of generative artificial intelligence (AI) could trigger a seismic shift in the creative industry are definitely over.

That shift is already underway.

A study by researchers from Washington University, NYU and Harvard now provides some numbers that confirm the gut feeling of many and offer deep insights into the transformation we are witnessing.

Studying ChatGPT’s influence on creative roles

The study is based on data from Upwork, a platform for freelancers, and focuses on how ChatGPT influences creative roles, particularly graphic designers and copywriters.

The figures are very clear:

  • Noticeable decrease in job opportunities and earnings.
  • Roughly 2% fall in monthly job acquisition.
  • About 5.2% drop in monthly earnings post-ChatGPT.
  • Adverse effects are seen across all skill levels.

And the bottom line is not surprising:

  • ChatGPT replaces traditional human tasks and leads to less demand for certain skills.

Strategies for Creative Freelancers

The trend is clearly towards AI taking over. But what does that mean for creative freelancers?

How can they stay competitive in this changing environment?

The study actually contains some pointers that we should think about:

The biggest mistake would be to hide behind the illusion that there will never be an AI model that can replace a “truly creative human”. That is ego-tripping.

Might be better to think the other way around:

By using AI as a tool and continuously improving our capabilities (both human capabilities and the humans/AI collab skills), we as creatives can use these new man-machine-synergies to achieve extraordinary innovation and artistic breakthroughs.

I am afraid, but it seems quality alone isn’t enough anymore.

High skill levels in writing don’t safeguard against AI’s competitive edge.

Even the best in the field will face AI-driven disruptions.

So, I would cautiously suggest that there are at least

5 (Preliminary) Rules For Survival

  1. Embrace YOUR creativity. Focus on personal flair and deep niche insights that AI cannot replicate (yet)
  2. Embrace AI’s as a tool. Don’t fear it as a rival. Use AI for tasks like drafting and brainstorming, enhancing your creative process.
  3. Diversify and Upskill: Integrate AI skills into your portfolio and explore less AI-impacted fields.
  4. Stay Informed and Agile: Keeping up with tech advancements and adapting quickly seems crucial.
