60 and Sassy!
January Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Fun”
Please don’t take yourself too seriously
Every significant birthday (those ending with a zero), my sisters and I have a tradition. We put together a pass-the-parcel type package that the birthday person opens, and each layer contains an item that the birthday person must put on.
As you can see from the image, these items aren’t necessarily the most flattering or useful. There’s been a wide variety of items over the years, and all of my sisters have taken delight in donning long sparkling eyelashes, bright pink lipstick, and an absolute blizzard of feather boas.
Unfortunately, this tradition has not transferred to our children. While they enjoy choosing and helping to put together the package for the recipient to open, none of them has agreed to take part in the ceremony.
Perhaps it’s the unwillingness to look foolish. Although they’ve seen their mothers adopt this tradition with gusto, happily posing for photos throughout the process and laughing like loons, they don’t want to be the center of the madness.
But I hope that all of them, at some point, will look at themselves at that significant point in their lives and decide that donning silly glasses, lip gloss, and a lacy bralette is a small price to pay for the joyful celebration of another decade of life.
Plus, who wouldn’t want to look this fabulous?!?
