6 Ways to Tell if Someone is a Closet Racist

6 microaggressions that are dead giveaways for closet racists.

I didn’t want to believe it.

Some of the closest friends I’ve ever had in my life are racist. Was it a surprise? Nope. It just proves time and time again that you have two types of racists. Your conservative ones that outwardly display their hatred of Black People.

And the people you need to watch out for — the closet racists. They’re hard to catch and often disguise themselves as white liberals.

So to save you some trouble, here are a few dead giveaways that confirm your friend is a closet racist.

1. They try to act “ghetto” around you.

Black people don’t like it when white people or non-black POC try to act “cool” or “ghetto” around us.

Those cringy moments when you see white people using A.A.V.E. (African-American Vernacular English) saying words like lit, fam, ratchet, etc. It’s beyond cringy.

This shows how non-black people put on a caricature of blackness like a coat and take it off in certain settings. They see blackness as a trend and use it for clout or coolness, then discard it whenever they feel like it.

Those people are one step away from saying the n-word.

2. They voted for Trump.

Given Trump’s extremely racist track record and him having ties with hate groups like the Nazis and the K.K.K., you know what type of person your friend is if they voted for him.

Don’t make me get into his tweets.

I don’t rock with the Democrats either, but if we’re gonna talk about racism, let’s drop the bullshit and call a spade a spade.

If your friend voted for Trump but claims not to be a racist…come on now. You don’t need that negative energy in your life.

3. They don’t see color.

I don’t see color too but I have to know when a stoplight turns red.

In a perfect world, we all wouldn’t see color. But that isn’t the case after 300 years of slavery, police brutality, the school to prison pipeline, etc. Someone sees color or else none of this would happen.

People who say this use it as a way to dismiss the struggles Black People endure daily. Almost like saying, “we bleed the same blood”.

If they don’t see color then they don’t see the pain Black People go through every day. They need to see color to try to understand how Black People are feeling.

These people just want to All Lives Matter the situation and that’s racist as hell.

4. They are silent when racist actions occur.

When the protesting began, I knew there had to be a million and one celebrities and companies formulating P.R. statements from the git.

In these times, if non-black people don’t speak out about racial tensions within this country, you’re automatically labeled a racist.

Now I’m not saying they have to get a Twitter account and write a ten-minute soliloquy about how they hate racism, but if your friend is silent, they need to do something behind the scenes.

If they aren’t raising awareness for the cause, the least they can do is donate a few bucks to bail-out funds and sign petitions.

If something’s wrong, they should speak up on it.

Like Martin Luther King Says,

“If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.”

5. They whitewash black people.

I had a friend in high school who claimed to be a white liberal. She went to protests and put up the #BlackLivesMatter fist for days.

She had a serious art bug and jumped at the chance of sculpting, writing, or painting a mural for the school.

She said that she wanted to make a mural of Civil Rights activists like Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, etc, and turn them into Star Wars characters.

My mind ran in circles.

Considering how Star Wars is a racist franchise with only a couple of Black People in it, it seemed very tone-deaf.

These people emulate the white executives in board rooms who want to do something that’s super “woke” so they put together a tone-deaf ad (like the Kendall Jenner Pepsi commercial) to show they’re down for the cause.

To be honest, if they’re gonna do that, they lack education.

6. They say they have a black friend.

Uggghhhh. I’m rolling over in my bed right now.

How many friends have told you this shpeal?

Look, you can have a black friend and still be racist. Donald Trump probably has a black friend, so?

You can’t express hatred for black people then turn around and use your “black friend” (which you probably don’t even have) as a scapegoat to prove you’re not racist.

Having a black friend doesn’t erase the racism that’s been taught subconsciously for years in every household.

Let your friend know that one black friend doesn’t erase 300 years of slavery. They can’t cheat.

Conclusion

If there’s one thing you need to take from this post, it’s to watch the non-black liberals like a hawk.

One day they’ll protest for Black lives, then they’ll be an N.R.A. member the next.

If you have any friends that match some of the qualities I listed, please consider dropping them.

These aren’t all of the qualities that show someone is a closet-racist, but I see them come up a lot when non-black people try to defend their anti-blackness.

Watch out for those closet-racists, they’re more deadly than you think.
