6 Things I Learned In My First 6 Weeks On Medium

Did You Know writers could get paid to write online?!

Disclaimer: This Is Not Another How-To Article

There’s a lot of fantastic advice for writers on Medium and I will share a few of my favorite articles. I am still new to this platform and it has been a lovely experience so far.

If I had the secret to earning your first 100 dollars or writing an article that will go viral, believe me I would share.

These are some things I have learned as a writer who has more experience with the Notes app than any public platform.

(Thank you to Joanie Adams for creating this lovely piece)

1) Attracting Attention is Necessary!

  • Your headline and photos are the readers’ first impression.
  • Lists seem to be a successful way to keep attention, use what works.
  • Don’t be afraid to promote your work; building an audience is crucial.
  • Remember that we’re all here to appreciate each other’s creations.

2) Connection is Vital!

  • Reading and responding to other writers is inspiring and a proactive way to build your audience. We have so much to learn from each other.
  • The attention is often reciprocated. I have seen nothing but positivity and encouragement in the comments on Medium, it’s so refreshing.

3) Consistency is Key!

  • Getting into the habit of writing every day has been incredibly helpful.
  • Even if you’re not posting daily, having a project that you’re working on is a great way to keep your creativity active.
  • Every idea doesn’t have to be a winner, just keep practicing.

4) Ask Questions!

  • Presenting theories is a great way to start a conversation.
  • Curiosity is the fuel of my writing; some of my best writing happens when I find a concept I’m fascinated by and do extensive research.
  • Those who pretend to know everything are only fooling themselves.

5) Originality is Relative!

  • Writing an original piece doesn’t necessarily mean that no one has written about the topic before.
  • Your perspective makes everything you write unique.
  • “I never thought about it like that!” Is my favorite compliment.

6) Enjoy the Process!

  • Sharing stories, exploring theories, and connecting with fellow writers is an extraordinary experience. Take the time to revel in the joy of it.
  • Prioritize genuine creativity over the amount of money you’re making.
  • Your opinion of your work is the most important! If you enjoy writing it, that will absolutely translate to readers.
