6 Things Highly Successful People Do Differently
#1 They know how to embrace failure

As humans, success is something we constantly strive for. Everyone wants a piece of it.
Nobody wants to be mediocre; everyone wants to be successful.
However, being successful is not as easy as it seems. If it was that easy, everyone would be successful.
Success isn’t a destination but rather, it is a journey that never ends.
The journey towards a successful life comes with making tough choices. Indeed, the road to the top is one that requires consistency, devotion and sometimes, loneliness.
For many people, the definition of success varies. It could mean different things to different people.
General definitions describe success as “achieving of desired results, or someone or something that achieves positive results”, although it is also particularly defined as “the fact of getting or achieving wealth, respect or fame.”
Have you ever wondered how some people became so successful?
Here are some unique qualities that make successful individuals stand out:
1. They know how to embrace failure
When people make it to the top, the world focuses on their success stories. We mostly look on the bright side, without remembering that these are people that have also had their fair share of repeated failures and personal struggles.
Many people tend to assume that successful people are the selected few that got lucky or had the right connections, but this isn’t always the case.
The truth is, successful people are those who have failed several times but never allowed their failures to define them. Rather than seeing failure as an obstacle or a stumbling block, they simply embrace it as a path towards success.
No matter how hard anyone tries, failure remains an essential part of life’s learning process. If we wish to grow, we should be ready to accept failure whenever it comes.
Great people like Thomas Edison and J. K Rowlings have told their stories over and over.
J.K Rowling’s manuscript for Harry Potter was rejected by 12 publishers before anyone else accepted it, while it took Thomas Edison several unsuccessful attempts to make a light bulb work.
According to Travis Bradberry, a leadership adviser on Forbes, using failure to one’s advantage is a demonstration of mental strength and resilience.
Successful people don’t waste time focusing on the negatives, rather, they are more inclined towards positivity.
“Success is stumbling from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm.” — Winston Churchill
2. They are risk-takers
Risk-taking is an essential part of life. Many successful people take risks, not because they are reckless, but because it is needed to make daring moves.
Embracing calculated risks is part of the lifestyle of any successful person.
It would make more sense to say that a successful person pursues opportunities only when he knows the limit of risk involved.
While continuously aiming for their goals and making other relevant plans, successful people manage the risks along the way.
Richard Branson, the CEO of Virgin Atlantic advises that anyone who opts to live a safe life will never know what it truly feels like to win. In the same vein, Mark Zuckerberg the founder of Facebook also adds that “In a world that’s changing really quickly, the only strategy that is guaranteed to fail is not taking risks.”
Stability could be quite comforting, but it may not provide the much-needed requirement for growth and advancement.
Truly, being successful requires courage and audacity.
Some risks may not pay off immediately, but it is an endeavor worth trying. Risk-takers are change-makers who step outside their comfort zone to do new things.
Risk-taking isn’t something to be perceived negatively.
“Life is inherently risky. There is only one big risk you should avoid at all costs, and that is the risk of doing nothing.”- Denis Waitley.
3. They focus on only the things that matter
Successful teams and people have one thing in common: Focus.
They have no time for distractions.
As Charles Huang puts it, highly effective people put first things first. They know what it is to prioritize and channel their energy towards important things. Instead of dwelling on past failures and distractions, they are more concerned about what brings them closer to fulfilling their next goal(s).
No matter what happens, those who excel are people who stay on track and keep going until they reach the finish line.
Steve Tobak, a management consultant, also advises that “if you want to be successful, just figure out what matters to you.”
Successful people focus on what matters because they:
- Learn what works and doesn’t work.
- Work and gain more experience.
- Aim to know more about business and figure how it work.
- Put themselves out there for better opportunities.
- Build more confidence from their successes and failures.
- Constantly add value.
- Always seek to get their priorities right.
4. They make things happen
Truly, success is based on one’s ability to make big things happen. Billionaire entrepreneur, Wayne Huizenga explains that:
“Some people dream of success, while other people get up every morning and make it happen.”
Successful people seek to make a difference wherever they find themselves. For this reason and more, they do not sit back to watch others do everything.
There is that driving force within them that pushes them to perfect their roles as problem solvers. They are trailblazers and pacesetters.
People who make it to the top are change agents. Their continuous desire to bring change is what fuels their passion to create and add value. All they know is that nothing good comes easy and they have to work for big things to happen.
Successful people always aim to make an impact wherever they are. In making this happen, they set specific goals for themselves and do not back down when things get tough. They simply spell out what they need to do and they get it done.
“There are people who make things happen, there are others who watch things happen and there are people who wonder what happened. To be successful, you need to be a person who makes things happen.”- James Lovell
5. They do not follow the crowd

Successful people tend to stand out in their decision-making abilities and general attitude towards life.
In his book “Change your habits, change your mind”, Thomas Corley observes that rather than following the crowd, successful people create their own new herd and then pull others into it.
High-flyers stand out in their own right and are distinctive. Their unwillingness to follow “the crowd mentality" shows that they have great control over their thoughts and are not easily swayed by external influence.
“ The one who follows the crowd will usually go no further than the crowd. The one who walks alone is likely to find themselves in places no one has ever been.” — Francis Phillip Wernig
6. They are never satisfied with mediocrity
Whether it pertains to work or anything else, high performers always seek to outperform by giving it their best at all times. They are always hungry for more because they believe that nothing is too hard to achieve.
Successful people tend to show serious commitment towards their goals and do not treat work lightly because it is a representation of who they are. If their efforts are to speak for them, they want it to be without blemish.
Truly, discipline is what gets a determined person through the door. Then comes, the will to never settle for less. For these special individuals, they will stop at nothing to get to the top. They are high-flyers that will perform over and above the norm.
Successful people understand that success comes to anyone who is willing to pay the price.
In view of the above, Eric Deschamps, a business coach and co-owner of rhapsody strategies notes that successful people understand the principle of reaping and sowing and this is what pushes them to go above and beyond by doing extraordinary things. Their unique abilities often get them noticed.
Final Thoughts
From afar, successful people may seem like superheroes, but guess what? They have no superpower(s). Indeed, closer observation will reveal that beneath all that success lies someone who is willing to push past anything associated with mediocrity.
No matter how hard we try, success doesn’t happen overnight. For many people, it is not a straight path, neither is it something that can be gotten on a platter of gold.
While each person’s path to success varies, persistence, hard work and resilience are visible attributes of the most successful people in the world.
