6 reasons Bernie might be the only one who can beat Trump
Passion and integrity are key elements
Apparently there is panic among the establishment Democrats because Bernie is surging. Again. Just like he surged back in 2016.
Some news outlets were reporting that the establishment was hoping that Bloomberg could “save the day”, since support for the “electable” Biden is cratering. Yet anyone who saw the Nevada debate on Wednesday knows that Bloomberg is not the solution. He underwhelmed.
Instead of panicking and trying to find the “acceptable alternative” to Bernie Sanders, perhaps the establishment needs to respect the will of the voters who will, after all, eventually determine the winner of the 2020 election.
Here are five reasons why I think Bernie might be the Democrat most likely to beat Donald Trump.
1. Bernie has a passionate base — just like Trump
One thing people seem to forget — Trump wasn’t popular with Republicans in 2016. He didn’t win majorities, he won pluralities. There were conservatives who became staunch never-Trumpers.
However, the portion of the party that did support Trump — his base — would crawl through glass to vote for him. They weren’t tepid in their support, they were passionate.
In 2020, who on the Democratic side garners this type of passion? It’s not Biden or Buttigieg or Bloomberg. It’s Bernie.
Bernie supporters will drive miles to pack his rallies and will bring along their friends. They will skip their daily soy latte to donate $5 to his campaign. They will volunteer for him and swarm the net to defend him.
These things matter when it comes to winning elections.
2. Bernie comes across as authentic — just like Trump
Bernie does not flip-flop. He does not test which way the political wind is blowing before he comes out with an opinion. He does not carefully craft his speeches based on the polls.
In an odd way, in his authenticity he is like Trump. For all the media lambaste Trump for being vulgar and horrid, does anyone doubt that Trump actually means whatever he is saying when he says it?
People are tired of calculating politicians. Authenticity resonates, and Bernie is authentic.
3. Bernie has been in politics for a while
While many people may not see this as a positive, Bernie’s long career in politics means that his baggage has already been sorted through and examined. Anything that can possibly offend voters has already been exposed.
Who doesn’t know, at this point, that Bernie honeymooned in the Soviet Union? Who doesn’t know he was a registered Independent for most of his political career? Who doesn’t know he supports universal health care?
There are no surprises with Bernie Sanders. There is also no trace of corruption. We don’t need to worry about some backroom deal being discovered. Any such scandals would have been revealed long ago.
4. Bernie remains popular in Vermont
Bernie Sanders was a four term mayor of Burlington, Vermont. One telling fact — he remains very popular in the state. While Mayor Bloomberg had a 49% approval rating in August 2010 and Mayor Pete’s relations with the black residents of South Bend has been fraught with controversy, Bernie Sanders garnered a larger share of the vote each time he ran as mayor, with 56% in 1987. He remains extremely popular in the state to this day.
While he is a socialist, he was able to work with people across the spectrum to get things done. According to this article, even business leaders who initially distrusted him came to admire and respect him because he listened to their viewpoints, he was pragmatic and he worked hard.
One example the article cites is his friendship with one of the richest men in Burlington, Pomerleau, a Republican. Despite differences in ideology, they worked together and for the past 35 years Sanders has never missed one of Pomerleau’s Christmas parties for underprivileged children.
Another businessman is quoted as saying “Bernie was never anti-growth, anti-development, or anti-business. He just wanted businesses to be responsible toward their employees and the community. He wanted local entrepreneurs to thrive. He wanted people to have good jobs that pay a living wage. If you could deal with that, you could deal with Bernie and Bernie would deal with you.”
This type of respect and admiration from a city he governed for four terms is important because it speaks to his record. Voters can examine his actions and see how he might govern as President. It’s reassuring to realize that for all of his rhetoric, Sanders has been, in the past, been willing to work with opponents for the common good.
5. Bernie has integrity
One of the reasons Trump’s attacks on his opponents work so well is that Trump finds and exploits their insecurities and weaknesses. With Bernie, what you see is what you get. The man has the type of confidence that comes from integrity. That makes it much harder for someone like Trump to denigrate him in a way that sticks.
6. Bernie’s message resonates with younger voters
Finally, there is Bernie’s popularity with younger voters. He can reach to a group that is often disengaged from politics. Not only will this help Democrats in the long run, it will also help in the election against Trump.
Finally — there is this to consider. What if Bernie Sanders seems to have the election stolen from him? What if his supporters perceive the establishment and media are out to “get” their candidate? Or what if he goes to the convention with the most votes, but is short the delegates to win outright, and a brokered convention chooses a more conventional candidate?
The typical Bernie supporter can be notoriously fickle and may choose to stay home or vote third party or even to support Trump if he or she feels that Bernie has been stabbed in the back. While that is not a reason to support Bernie, it is a reason to make sure that the primary process is conducted in a transparent and fair manner.
