# 2. Don’t think about the result

Medium is a huge platform for readers and writers with lots and lots of ideas flowing every day in every direction.

Initially, I started with technical write-ups then to improve myself in all aspects of life, I planned to read more mindful articles.

I became a member of this huge platform when my friend gifted me with a one-year subscription and there it all started. With membership, I was opened to read more articles.

To improve my English vocabulary, to learn and explore something new, to express my thoughts and feelings, I started to write mindful articles.

This turned out me.

Now I am obsessed with writing mindful and inspirational articles.

This article is mainly for people who thrive like me to achieve something as a writer but give up writing because of various reasons.

There are six mindful thoughts from my experience which I believe will be helpful for you to sustain as a writer in competitive platforms like Medium.

And these thoughts can be related to other real-life situations too.

1. Don’t care about things that you don’t have control

People usually try to control things which they cannot control but they don’t even have a thought to control things which they can control.

There are values like popularity, rewards, recognition, etc that we expect from others are not in our control. You work really hard to achieve these values but when you fail to achieve, you get exhausted, unmotivated, and finally give up.

There are many new writers who have a dream to become a great writer and reach more heights on a platform like Medium. But they do the same mistake which I did a few months back, expecting something which they don’t have any control over.

I used to see my stats every hour after my article got published to check whether my article got curated, to see the number of viewers, readers, and clapped fans.

This really sucked every time and I almost gave up writing.

Curation, number of views, and fans are values that you don’t have even a bit of control over.

Instead, you can concentrate on values that groom your writing and idea generation skills. When you groom the skills that are required to write quality content then it will draw more viewers, readers, and fans automatically.

This is not only for writing, for anything that you like to do. Focus on the values that you can control.

2. Don’t think about the result

We often think about the result even before starting to work on anything.

When I started to write in Medium, I used to think and question myself more about the result. Will I get more views, more reads, and more claps? Whether my article will be accepted by this huge publication? What if my article is rejected?

Results can be positive or negative.

If you work for a positive result then you will try to be a perfectionist taking more time to carve your art or you always dream about the result and the happiness that the result gets you.

Thinking about the negative result will block your mind, cause anxiety, and suppress you from writing good content.

Do not think about the result instead think about new ideas that serve your curiosity.

Think about the ways to improve yourself.

Create a process that improves you daily and rely on it, and always be obsessed with your improvements.

3. Find your productive hours

Most of the time you will not able to concentrate on your side hustle because of your family situations, work pressure, etc

I do have a 9 to 5 job, so I cannot concentrate on writing full time.

Moreover, I am the father of 2 years old kid so it is difficult for me to write when she is around me playing all the time.

I require a quiet environment to think and write articles.

So I analyzed what is the right time for me to write articles without any disturbances and found that only in the early mornings when everyone sleeps I can peacefully think and write about anything.

Early morning minutes are beautiful, peaceful with no work pressure or other disturbances.

I wake up early before 6.30 daily so that I often get two peaceful hours to do whatever I think.

I invest one hour in writting and the remaining hour in reading a book or articles or listening to podcasts.

Research the way you spend your time and find your productive minutes to do your side hustle. These minutes are really important because it decides what you will be in the future.

4. Don’t compare yourself with others

I used to compare myself with the top writers and try to adopt their lifestyle. But it didn’t work out because they are different from me, their time limit for a day is different from mine.

Most of the time when I compared myself with the top writers I felt that I am very low and this made me think that I can’t be a good writer which caused stress and depression.

Don’t compare yourself with others because everyone is unique in their own way.

Moreover, the person whom you are comparing did not achieve this status in one night. They would have failed multiple times, faced more criticism from others, barely slept due to the thoughts about their future, but they relied on perseverance.

If someone is better than you then he has failed many times than you.

So instead of comparing, learn from them, and create your own lifestyle.

Most writers are transparent about their vulnerabilities, so learn how they are exposing their scars.

Try to learn how they transform a simple idea or even a conversation into an interesting article.

Write down the new words and idioms they use in their work and try to use it in your write up.

Don’t simply be a follower, be a student who is eager to learn something new from their idol.

5. Do experiments with your actions

You think you are right without experiencing things and wrongly assume what is going to happen in the future. Nothing is certain unless already it has happened.

Only when you experiment with different actions, you actually know what you are capable of, what works, and don't work.

Write different genre articles like technical, psychological, life lessons, product reviews, etc.

Analyze what really works out, what doesn’t, and what your readers are expecting from you. Concentrate and improve yourself in those areas.

You will fail for sure at most of your experiments, but instead of turning down your failures, accept it, learn from it, and evolve.

No one can teach you better than your experience. Experience comes when you experiment more, fail more, and learn more. When you experience new things then you will improve automatically.

And don’t worry about being wrong and being wrong will open up the possibility of change and brings the opportunity for growth.

Manginute of your success is based on how many times you have failed.

6. Be a reader before being a writer

You can’t write even a single word if you don’t know what to write.

During my initial days as a writer, I used to stare at a white screen waiting for ideas to flow, but slowly I came to know that Ideas never flow by staring at a screen rather ideas will only flow by creating a habit of reading.

Reading enriches our brains with knowledge.

I started to invest at least one hour a day to read books, articles, hear podcasts and make notes of important points in a google sheet to later recall what I have read.

By doing this continuously for some days, I felt somewhat spontaneous than before. Instead of staring at the screen with a lack of ideas, I sensed more ideas getting flowed in me.

I learned to process my thoughts, ideas, and to express them in a better way.

Thus my ideas and thoughts are expressed through my write-ups.

Constant reading habit improves your creativity which leads to spontaneity in your actions.

Final Thoughts

  1. Don’t work hard to achieve something like popularity, money, people’s love, etc that you don’t have any control over.
  2. Your result may be positive or negative, thinking about your result will only give you pleasure or stress. Both are not going to help you grow.
  3. Find your own productive hours and use it well.
  4. Don’t be a follower instead be a student.
  5. Understand what works for you by experimenting with different actions.
  6. To be a writer, first, you should be a reader.
  7. You cannot become a prolific writer in a day or a month or even in a couple of months. It really requires more effort, more research, a constant search for ideas, and most importantly mindset to persevere in any situation.
