6 Life Lessons From A Mosquito

Insights from the scum of the earth

Nobody likes mosquitos. They are statistically the most deadly animal and arguably the most annoying.

However, as with even the most useless things in life, there is often something we can learn from them.

I’m no expert on mosquitoes but I’ve encountered (and battled) a fair few in my lifetime and would like to share my insights on what we can learn from these ugly pests.

1. You are never too small to make an impact

There’s an African proverb that says:

“If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito.”

These seemingly insignificant creatures can ruin your night with their constant annoying buzz in your ear. No matter how flawed or little you feel, just like a mosquito, you have the ability to impact the lives of others.

Granted, you don’t want to be a pest to the giants of the world. But what you can do is add value to the lives of others. Make an effort to better yourself every day, and regardless of where you are in life right now, you can make a difference in the world.

2. Be Persistent

My goodness, mosquitos are persistent.

But that’s because they know what they want and never lose sight of their goal. If they want a bite of you, they’ll keep coming back, no matter how many times they are swatted away.

There’s no bruised ego from the initial rejection you give them. They’ll keep coming back until they get what they want or see a better opportunity. The lesson here is not about disturbing people until you get what you want. It’s about persevering in the face of rejection and difficulty. Which brings me to the next point.

3. Ignore Obstacles

I’ve had mosquito bites through my socks and know people who regularly get bites through their tights.

When faced with the obstacle of an extra layer of clothing to get through, mosquitos don’t back down and decide to call it a day. They instead put in the added effort to reach their goal.

Many obstacles are an illusion, a mental game that is a mere test of our dedication. What we can learn here is that obstacles should not be a barrier between us and our objective. Like a mosquito, we should bite through the hurdles because hard work pays off.

4. Take Risks

Being a mosquito is a risky business. Every meal has a high potential of being your last. But what’s life without a bit of adventure? They do take risks out of necessity, but if successful end up reaping the benefits of a hearty meal.

It makes more sense to go for opportunities that have a higher chance of reward, but to get anywhere in life, we need to take risks. Sure, they may not pay off, but inaction and remaining in your comfort zone often leads to mediocrity and regret.

Be smart about the risks you take. Go for what has the least drawbacks and highest reward.

5. Be Adaptable

Mosquitos have been here for millions of years. They have outlived countless bigger and more deserving animals to continue to pester us. I guess their ability to adapt deserves some sort of respect.

With a world that is changing faster by the day, being adaptable is one of the most important skills to focus on. To ride the wave of change, we must have a growth mindset. One that focuses on learning, open-mindedness, and humility. Life will go on with or without us, so the best we can do is stay one step ahead and be open to change.

6. Leave an impact

You know you have been visited by a mosquito because of that itchy lump they leave you. As we go through life, we don’t want to pester people into scratching themselves, but we want to impact their lives in a positive way.

Treat every day as an opportunity to add value to the lives of others. It’s not necessarily about leaving your mark, but more about creating a positive impact through your deeds and actions.

Mosquitos don’t just bite one person, they bite whoever they come across. Like them, we shouldn’t keep our love and kindness for just a few close people but should open our hearts to all who cross our path.

Nature often holds the answers to some of our biggest questions. There are plenty of examples that when applied to ourselves, benefit us greatly

Though primarily negative in nature, there are many things we can learn from mosquitos to apply to our own lives. Next time you see a mosquito, take a moment to appreciate some of its qualities. And then kill it.
