EARN RESPECT | GET NOTICED
6 Effective Strategies To Gain Respect From Your Managers/Leaders
Disclaimer: This is only for those who consider moving up the corporate ladder as success and ambition. If your perspective differs, this article may not fully resonate with your views.
This is an unfair world. If you keep working hard quietly without bothering anyone, you may feel content but your growth will be hindered. As an introvert myself, I understood quite late that to be successful, it would take more than just working hard.
One important aspect of growth is to accept the fact that you will need blessings from your leaders to move forward. The leaders need to notice you as someone who is ready to take more responsibility. And to get noticed, you will first have to earn their respect.
After spending 10+ successful years, I have learned from my coaches and my own experiences that there are 6 things you can consciously do to earn the respect of your managers/leaders. I am still learning and so, there might be more to it. Will update this article, as and when I learn more.

1. Always Remind Yourself Your Worth
Your leaders will judge from the way you communicate. So, make sure that you focus on getting your communication style fixed (if a fix is required at all).
When you get an opportunity to talk to your managers/leaders, there is a tendency to feel low and overwhelmed, leading to a mix-up of words or becoming either over-expressive or unexpressive altogether.
Before your meeting with your leader, remind yourself of your worth and the value you bring to your current position. Your past performances and successes speak for themselves. Never self-doubt come close to you in such times.
2. Remind Yourself That The Leaders/Managers Are Humans Too
CXOs, Directors, Senior Managers, all of these are titles and behind the title, there is a human being who like you may be struggling every morning in sending their kids to school, who also have ailing parents they need to take care of, who like you is worried about their future.
Keep yourself calm and composed. You are not facing an alien.
3. Prepare and Keep Things At The Level They Understand
Leaders are short of time. If they have agreed to meet with you/your team, do not beat around the bush. Come straight to the point.
You must prepare your talk before the meeting. How will you begin? Do you need a slide pack? If yes, what will be your talk track per slide? Do you need to show a demo? What will be the talk track while showing the demo?
Also, do not go into too many details. Leaders want to see a holistic view or a 10,000 ft above-the-ground view.
Be clear and concise in your message.
4. Be Respectful and Listen To Their Views
You are no one to judge if your leader/manager is worth their position. Always remember that your leaders have demonstrated their value to your organization and are 100% worth the position they hold.
Respect their title. I am not suggesting you bow down or unquestioningly follow their every decision, but recognizing their role and the responsibilities that come with it can foster a more harmonious and productive work environment. If they do not agree with your views, don’t act offended. You cannot reject them outright.
Instead, focus on open communication, collaboration, and providing constructive feedback when necessary.
5. Be a Problem Solver
Instead of merely conveying problems, strive to be a problem solver. Leaders appreciate team members who not only identify issues but also contribute solutions.
If you need any help from your leaders to solve the problem, don’t hesitate to seek their support. However, expecting your leaders to consistently provide solutions for your daily tasks is not correct. Be proactive in finding resolutions.
6. Discuss instead of Showing
In your meetings with your leaders, engage with them by pausing frequently to provide opportunities to ask any question and by asking their opinions or views.
Don’t let your meeting be a one-way communication.
Getting noticed by your leaders is absolutely important for your growth. Along with working hard, keep the above points in mind.
