6 Daily Habits Billionaires Do Not Do

Morning Routines of World’s Best vs World’s Most Mediocre

Photo by David Suarez on Unsplash

To get inspired, I like to consume motivational content every morning before getting started with my day. Many lifestyle bloggers discuss the importance of designing a consistent morning routine to set them up for success. There seems to be a lot of focus on people getting up at 5 am every morning — still not sure why and having a cold shower. Combine these two and this will be enough to change your life for good. Hmm, may need to think about this one.

During my quest for the perfect morning routine to generate more productivity into my life, I stumbled across an article, ‘6 daily habits of self-made billionaires’, see link below for the original post.

https://careers.workopolis.com/advice/6-daily-habits-of-self-made-billionaires/

It is pretty clear Billionaires do not make it to the top by accident and seem to be adopting similar habits along the way, with a lot of emphasis on ‘winning the morning.’ I wanted to compare my morning routine with some very successful people to see if there are any obvious reasons why I haven’t made it yet.

It wasn’t always clear to me the difference between those with billion-dollar bills nestled comfortably in their dinner jackets and the rest of us mere mortals. I am hoping through this analysis that we can dig a little deeper as a team to get to the bottom of this phenomenon and change everyone’s life in one blog post. Deal?

Here is a comparison between the 6-morning habits of my ever so slightly richer counterparts vs my morning routine. Let’s see how these morning rituals set us up for success, or not.

  1. Getting up at 5 AM vs Hitting the Snooze Button 7 Times Every Morning
Photo by bruce mars on Unsplash

I like to get up at 5 AM every morning and attack the day with my best foot forward. Bill Gates on the other hand is a late riser and an avid snooze button hitter. He often has to fight with his flatmates to get a shower in before work — coz they only have one working shower in the house and has a mad rush to get to his 9 am meeting on time. Sort it out, William.

2. Meditating vs Scrolling Through Phone and Social Media Posts

Every day before sunrise, I like to get up and do some meditation. I feel that it puts me in a state of Zen and provides the right headspace to start the day. Billionaire investor Ray Dalio conversely prefers to scroll through his phone to see if any funny videos have been posted on the internet. Time is money, Ray.

3. Exercising vs Not Exercising

Getting some exercise done every morning without fail is important to energize me and make me feel good throughout the day. Michael Jordan meanwhile is just full of excuses. He often says things to himself like ‘it may make me tired for the rest of the day’ and ‘I can always do exercise on my lunch break’ — which he never does. Leave your excuses at the door, Mike.

4. Getting That Much-Needed Sleep vs Staying up for No Good Reason

I like to stay disciplined to ensure I get at least 8–10 hours of sleep a day. This helps me recharge my batteries and allows me to comfortably get up for my morning meditation and exercise. Elon Musk would prefer to ignore his body clock and put his circadian rhythms out of sync by watching another 3 episodes of The Office, although he has already seen it 5 times. Get your head in the game, Elon.

5. Reading vs Not Reading

I like to consume all financial papers to get the best stock picks and stay up to date with current affairs. Warren Buffet the silly sausage, doesn’t even read for 5 hours every morning. I know, weird right? Can you imagine? Readers are Leaders, Warren.

6. Living Below Means vs Keeping up With the Joneses

Despite having high wealth at my disposal, I prefer to wear the same $5 t-shirts and collect coupons, while shopping at Walmart to keep costs down and always strive to maintain strict budgeting. Mark Zuckerberg prefers to instead live pay-check to pay-check and has maxed out credit cards to keep up with the Joneses. You are better than that, Zuckerz.

I am liable to say there is no proof that Bill Gates only has one working shower in his house, Mark Zuckerberg may or may not consume to impress his pals and Ray Dalio almost certainly doesn’t spend his mornings watching Charlie bit my finger on repeat. His loss.
