6 Book Releases I’m Excited To Read In 2023

New fiction books coming out this year

“Books make great gifts because they have whole worlds inside of them. And it’s much cheaper to buy somebody a book than it is to buy them the whole world!”— Neil Gaiman

I love reading. And when one of my favorite authors has a new book, I get so excited to go to the library or bookstore to pick it up.

There are lots of awesome books coming out this year. Here are five books that are coming out in 2023 that I can’t wait to read:

1. Happy Place by Emily Henry

Release Date: April 25, 2023 Genre: Romance, Contemporary

I am counting down the days until April for Emily Henry’s latest romance Happy Place. I’ve read four other Emily Henry books and really enjoyed them, so I have no doubt I will like this one as well.

This is a romance following Harriet and Wyn who, after being together for a decade, broke up six months ago. Now, they are stuck in a cottage with their friends for a week and need to pretend everything is fine.

2. Chalice of the Gods by Rick Riordan

Release Date: September 26, 2023 Genre: Fantasy, Mythology

Cover photo via Goodreads

I literally jumped up and down when Chalice of the Gods was announced last year.

The Percy Jackson series is one of my favorite series I read when I was younger. I loved Percy’s voice, fell in love with all of the characters, and laughed while reading. I like the way that Rick Riordan incorporates Greek mythology (and other mythology) into his books.

This book is set after the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series ends. Percy Jackson is trying to go to college, but he needs three recommendation letters from the gods. And to get them, he’ll need to go on three missions.

I think this book will be very fun. It’s coming out near my birthday, so I’m going to treat it like a little birthday present for myself.

3. Chain of Thorns by Cassandra Clare

Release Date: January 31, 2023 Genre: Fantasy, Historical Fiction

Cover photo via Goodreads

Chain of Thorns comes out later this month and I can't wait! Cassandra Clare actually has two books coming out this year (the other one being Sword Catcher which comes out late 2023), but this is the book I am the most excited to read.

This is the conclusion to her Last Hours trilogy and is set in the Shadowhunters world. In this world, demons exist in the real world and half-human half-angel warriors, known as Shadowhunters, must fight them in order to protect the world.

Also, unrelated to the contents of the book, the cover art is gorgeous. I am very excited to add this book to my collection with my other Cassandra Clare books.

4. Stars and Smoke by Marie Lu

Release Date: April 4, 2023 Genre: Young Adult Contemporary, Mystery, Romance

Cover photo via Goodreads

Several years ago, I read Marie Lu’s dystopian series Legend and loved it. Since then, I’ve been interested in picking up some of her other books, but none of them have quite caught my eye — until I saw this one.

The publishing blurb sums it up as “a superstar tapped to become a secret agent and the reluctant young spy assigned to be his partner.” I have a feeling this book will be entertaining and fast paced.

5. Borrow My Heart by Kasie West

Release Date: June 13, 2023 Genre: Young Adult Contemporary, Romance

Cover photo via Goodreads

I’ve read a few Kasie West books and always enjoyed them. They’re usually light-hearted contemporary teen romances that are quick reads. I saw the cover for Borrow My Heart (so cute) and immediately decided that this needed to go on the list.

From what I can gather, this book is about a boy named Asher who is being catfished by his online crush. The main character, Wren, overhearing this, decides to step in and pretend to be his online crush to save him from embarrassment.

6. The Seven Year Slip by Ashley Poston

Release Date: June 27, 2023 Genre: Contemporary, Magical Realism

Cover image via Goodreads

As soon as I saw the synopsis for this book, I knew I wanted to read it as soon as possible.

The publishing pitch is: “An overworked book publicist with a perfectly planned future hits a snag when she falls in love with her temporary roommate…only to discover he lives seven years in the past.

I love reading books about characters who work in the publishing industry. Plus, I think the added time-slip element will add a unique and interesting spin to the story.

Finally, I thought I would include a bonus book in this list, as I’m not sure if it will actually come out this year or not…

7. Heartstopper Volume 5 by Alice Oseman

Release Date: Maybe 2023? Genre: Graphic Novel, Young Adult Contemporary

There is no book cover or release date for this, but there are rumors that it could come out this year.

This is the fifth and final installment in the adorable graphic novel series Heartstopper. The series follows Charlie and Nick as they navigate their relationship, family drama, and mental health. I loved the first four volumes that are currently released, so I can’t wait to read the fifth one (whether it comes out this year or later).
