Summary

The author received a $520K offer from Rippling, despite initially failing a coding question, and shares insights from the interview process which included cultural fit assessments and technical evaluations.

Abstract

In 2022, the author underwent an interview process with Rippling, a company offering HR, IT, and Finance solutions through automated systems, and was unexpectedly offered a compensation package of 520K, including equity. The process involved a series of interviews designed to evaluate both technical prowess and cultural alignment with the company. Despite stumbling on a coding question, the author succeeded in impressing the hiring team, possibly due to their strong fit with Rippling's culture and values. The offer came after a detailed interview sequence that included a recruiter call, a technical phone screen, managerial discussions, coding and system design challenges, and a final offer negotiation. Rippling, which recently raised 250M in funding, emphasizes the importance of employee data management and has launched significant products like Global Payroll, expanding their reach beyond the U.S.

Opinions

  • The author was surprised to receive an offer from Rippling, suggesting an element of self-doubt or an awareness of a challenging interview process.
  • Rippling places a high value on cultural fit, as evidenced by the recruiter's probing questions about the author's interest in the company.
  • The use of recorded video interviews indicates a thorough and possibly data-driven approach to hiring at Rippling.
  • The author seems to appreciate the transparency and information provided by Rippling during the interview process, as it helped them understand the company's goals and culture.
  • The author's experience suggests that technical skills are not the sole factor in Rippling's hiring decisions; alignment with the company's mission and values is also crucial.

$520K Offer from Rippling— Even After Failing a Coding Question?

I interviewed with Rippling in 2022 and received an offer of $520K (~$270K in base salary and ~$1M / 4 years in equity). I was surprised to get an offer (as I will explain below), but I found some valuable takeaways from the interview process.

What’s Rippling?

Rippling is a suite of HR, IT, and Finance products that makes employee management easier. It starts with the fundamental building block of employee data, and then automates payroll, manages software, and handles administrative work when an employee changes teams, gets promoted, or leaves the company.

A concrete example of this is their Unity product, which enables custom, automated workflows across business systems within a company. For example, you could automatically receive a Slack alert if there’s a high-priority JIRA ticket assigned to an employee who’s out-of-office. Note that three different business services need to be integrated here, and Rippling makes that easy.

Rippling’s latest launch, Global Payroll, expands their fully automated payroll product beyond the U.S. This is a major development, as outlined in their blog post.

In May, Rippling raised $250M in its Series D, propelling its value to $11.25 billion. Top-tier investors, including Sequoia, Y Combinator, and Kleiner Perkins, participated in the round.

The Interview Process

The Rippling interview process includes:

  • A recruiter call
  • A technical phone screen
  • Manager chats (team matching)
  • An onsite with three rounds: Two coding rounds and one system design round
  • Another manager chat
  • Offer and negotiation

One interesting thing is that Rippling records all their video interviews. There’s an option to opt-out, but the recordings could be useful for the hiring committee to review performance in other interviews.

Recruiter Call

From the outset, I could tell Rippling was a company that highly values cultural fit. They weren’t just assessing my technical skills, but also ensuring I was genuinely interested in joining Rippling. My recruiter asked me about:

  • What I was currently working on
  • What I was looking for next
  • Why I was interested in Rippling

They really probed into my answer for the last question, and I could tell they were trying to tease out whether I’d be a good cultural fit for the company.

They also gave me more information about the company, its goals, and its culture, which I describe more below.
