Many writers love writing fiction. Yet, there are not a lot of publications focused on this genre. The most profitable option is to write a book. Some writer choose to publish on the self-publishing platform, Simily. But because of the low reader numbers, many stories earn little. The alternative for a chance to make more money is to enter competitions. No, this is not a Vocal hosted contest. This contest is hosted by a well-regarded magazine.
Fiction deserves a shot at gaining more income for the author. If you hope your original and empowering piece can make you $500, this is a competition worth entering.
It is super competitive. But so is the national lottery. The publication reports that it receives 200 submissions per week. On the brighter side, your content will get read. So, you will eventually receive an update on your completed piece. The other good news is that the rules are very flexible. It leaves you to interpret the prompt’s meaning and create a fictional post you think is empowering. Here are the details.
One Story
This publication is a respected magazine. Every month, it publishes one piece of literary fiction. The competition winner gets the cash payment plus 25 contributor copies for First Serial North American rights. You can keep them or gift some to family and friends. This publication has two submission periods. The first is January 15 — May 31, and the second is October 4 — November 14.
The magazine seeks original, unpublished material. And there is an exception. They will consider published submissions if it is in print outside of North America. You have the freedom to write the story that suits you. The One Story wants a fictional tale of any style and on any subject. The focus is to leave readers feeling satisfied and powerful enough to standalone. All rights revert to the author after it gets published.
No, you cannot resend a previously rejected fictional story. The sent file needs to be complete, and you can see the status of your submission via Submittable. They will respond three months after you submit it. The goal is to make sure every submitted piece gets a good read.
