50,000 Words on Medium in November
Going at my NaNoWriMo goals a little differently this year.
Hi! It’s been a while, but I’m back in action, guys.
So, 2023 has been a rough year for me in writing. Like many of us striving writers working so hard to get somewhere in our writing careers amid daily struggles, sometimes finding the time to write is really f***ing hard.
I’m still producing great articles for The Customs House Museum & Cultural Center here in beautiful and bustling Clarksville, Tennessee, but writing for myself has been more challenging. As you can see, I’ve barely touched Medium in months.
I quit my job last fall just to find myself in the situation again to need another job this past spring. My new job is part-time, though, so I have some wiggle room to work on the other things that need my attention. Although my new job is a fun one, working at a nearby state park that’s full of juicy history, working there four days a week still pulls me out of my writing mindset.
I have way too much fun here. I started working at the park at the beginning of cave tour season this year, and you bet your butt I was inside that cave as much as possible. Definitely tops the list of best places I’ve ever worked, hands all the way down.
What a distraction.
However, there’s nothing like the arrival of NaNoWriMo season to get back into the swing of things! Last year was my first real NaNoWriMo, when I really committed to the 50,000 word count goal. I had a story in my head that I’ve dabbled and played around with since I was an angsty teenager 20 — or so — years ago. I’d never laid out an entire draft, so I decided to make that story my project. I didn’t get to the end of the plot, but by the first of December, I did have a draft of 50,000 words toward my story that I never had before. What a wonderful gift to myself!
This year, I struggled to decide what to do for NaNoWriMo. I barely thought about projects in October, so November 1st hit me hard. I stumbled around, flip-flopping between a second draft of my story from last year, or working on something a little more relevant to my current life. I’ve been absent too long from Medium and I want to dive back in head first. What a better way to do that than to challenge myself to write 50,000 words in short stories, exclusive to Medium?
I just published a fun and twisty story today in my publication Fascinate Me Fiction, the first story towards my goal. I hope you’ll check it out and leave some feedback. I’m just getting started, though. I’m flexing my muscles after a long stretch of being stuck in the car that is my head on this long crazy road trip called life.
I hope you’ll stick it out with me this November and see if I can hit that 50,000 word count goal again this year!
