WRITING PROMPTS

5 Writing Prompts — Welcome to Dystopia

It is the end of the world as we know it. Are you bold enough to tell what happened?

Hi there! I’m so glad you came back for my next set of writing prompts. This week there are new hidden worlds to discover — the dark realms of Dystopia. We are dealing with nothing less but unshackled apocalyptical events here. I don’t want to keep you too long. Wander through Dystopia and bring back some thrilling responses.

№1 — Unseen

A small town lies abandoned. It was once founded to house workers for an economically important industry but had turned into a tourist attraction and suburban dwelling for people from the city. Its population shrank to only half the size of the town’s glory days, but one day they all disappeared. Do you know what happened to them?

№2 — Unshackled

Deep in the woods, next to an abandoned and broken cabin, I found these metal pieces that reminded me of shackles but were too large for humans. What monster or devil was hidden deep in the forest, and what happened to its watchers? Will that which was released bring the end of the world?

№3— Unprotected

The world as we knew it is gone. The main character managed to find an old bunker in which they survived. They are running short on supplies and have to get out and find food and water or die of starvation. What dangers wait for them in the outside world? What apocalyptic event brought the end of the world?

№4 — Unread

Last but not least is the writer’s apocalypse. The future is bleak, and all books are banned. The main character is among the few ordinary people still able to read. Their grandmother secretly wrote stories for them in the sand and the snow. One day, they stumble over a lost book on a frozen pond. It is wrinkled from the moisture but still readable. What story does it tell, or which secrets does it reveal?

№5 — Unhabitable

On day x, even the climate change skeptics were convinced. After years of massive heat waves and natural disasters, the weather changed radically, and Earth plunged into a new ice age. What is left of the world we know, and how do people live and survive?

A few things to consider:

  1. I invite you to use these prompts to inspire your writing — fiction, poetry, or maybe non-fiction.
  2. Post them wherever you want. Why not here on Imaginative Fiction Out There?
  3. Please tag me in your story responding to this prompt or leave a link in the comments. (I collect the responses and promote them with a sampler.)
  4. Tag your post with “Dystopia”.

Kathy K, Bradan Writes Stories, and FJCMontenegro: You asked for dystopian prompts. Here you go, give us a thrill! ;)

Hey, Ravyne Hawke and Christine Graves, may I prompt you too?

Hi. It’s so great you are here! My name is Jay, and I’m a fiction writer on Medium. It took me a while to finally publish my fiction but only ~27 years. That fits my motto, “Veni. Vidi. Inciampi.” I came. I saw. I stumbled. Stumbling and learning are part of my growth journey. Since March, I have actively stumbled through the writing world to pursue my dream and passion.

You love prompts, don’t you? Here’s another prompt: read my fictional tales, subscribe to my email list or join Medium with my referral link.
