5 Weekend YouTube Finds

“I can’t believe I just found out about them!”

What’s better than being glued on your screen for the weekend? Jokes aside, YouTube proves to be a legit way to spend your weekend. Loads of content there are waiting to be discovered. And hey, in this social distancing era, you actually contribute to the good of society by being a couch potato.

Even after years of YouTube-ing — if that’s even a word — I’d still stumble into channels I can’t believe I missed all this time. But that’s the beauty of YouTube. Contents are practically endless because there are always new, emerging creators on the rise popping out on this platform.

I favor YouTube over platforms like Netflix for one big reason. Even after binge-watching videos on YouTube, I rarely feel this hollow feeling of ‘now what?’ I usually experience after finishing a TV series. Instead, I would feel inspired, thought-provoked, and couldn’t wait to apply whatever knowledge I just acquired if it was a helpful practical video.

So, these are my recent find on YouTube that got me hooked in the past couple weeks.

Unfinished London

Fancy some British humor? Unfinished London is presented in a way it feels like a BBC documentary program, only it’s (way) more silly. Seriously, this channel is hilarious — even how the sponsorship reels.

Jay Foreman, the creator, will bring you through London from the point of view of (geeky) locals: A chaotic mess yet fascinating nonetheless. Many interesting facts are hidden among the unfinished tube lines, the logos of every London’s borough, and awkward buildings in awkward places. Jay unravels why London is the way it is by walking us through its extensive history.

Make sure to not eat anything while you watch, or else you risk some dinner mess because you can’t help to laugh uncontrollably.

Atlas Pro

Atlas Pro answers questions you never know you need to ask. What’s the origin of pets? Wait, should we change the names of continents based on what indigenous people call them? What’s the rarest element on earth? Why there are so many lions portrayed in Europe ancient and medieval culture, despite the animals live across the unexplored continent of Africa?

This channel is especially perfect if you’re a geography, culture, and science enthusiast. Every content is engaging and reveals the knowledge you previously don’t know about. It’s entertaining as well as educational.

Marion’s Kitchen

I low key blamed Marion for her role in my spices hoarding habit. If you are trying to dip your feet into Asian cooking, her channel will give you plenty of options on where to start. She covers a wide range of Asian cuisine, especially from East Asia and Southeast Asia. Her specialty is Thai food since that’s where her mother is from. But as an Indonesian, I can attest that she killed it too when she made Indonesian food.

Her instruction is not hard to follow. She also provides alternatives for ingredients that might be hard to be found in some parts of the world. The best thing is just watching her enthusiasm when explaining each step of the cooking process. It’s always refreshing to watch people being very passionate about what they do.

Self Sufficient Me

I started gardening a few months ago to keep myself occupied during the lock-down. When things don’t go well, such as when dealing with rats that eat my seedlings, I turned to YouTube for solutions.

That’s how I stumbled into Mr. Mark here. Just like Marion, his tips are applicable and clear. Mark himself also seems like a nice guy. What’s enviable is he’s got a vast garden with cockatoos and kangaroos as regular visitors, and most importantly, the green thumb I wish I have.

If you are planning to start a garden, his channel is not only helpful but also inspirational. As stated in its name, his vision is being self-sufficient in terms of food, which is many people start to realize how important it is during this pandemic.

Ethan Chlebowski

As an Asian, I was a bit skeptical when seeing a white guy telling me how to cook better-fried rice. What he proposes is to incorporate some science into it, that’s when I say, “Okay, why not?”.

Ethan’s channel is not just about cooking, but rather how to optimize the process using the best ingredients, techniques, and by understanding the science behind the cooking process itself.

His channel has just gained recognition from viewers recently. I’m excited to see how it will develop from here onward. His concept is pretty unique. It offers a breath of fresh air beyond just typical cooking slash exploring recipe channels.

So, any channel invokes your curiosity? Some will make you hungry. Some will make you dig some dirt and plant vegetables. All are binge-watchable.
