5 Ways to Successfully Balance Your Career and Family Life
Simple ways to restore sanity to your life and business.
“Don’t get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life.” — Dolly Parton.
In our present-day having a career seems to bring some kind of security and satisfaction but most times at the expense of our family and our lives, so many career men and women are in a dilemma of how to balance these.
Yeah, trust me it’s difficult. Taking a close look at both they are each important and each demands our time making us neglect the other but how do we fix this knowing that there are so many consequences that may occur when these two aspects of our lives are not adequately managed.
Placing work before the family can cause you to have a family in need of affection and attention, your partner lonely and daily wishing you could be more sensitive to this, the children exposed to external influences and you not being there to guide them through life.
In the end, the home becomes broken and the aim of having that career will be futile because there will be no family to share in your success and all eventually end in regrets and guilt.
On the other hand, not being successful in your career comes with some drawbacks and disappointment, low self-esteem, low income and so on…,
Therefore, what is fundamental is having a balance in both. My view of balance is being able to sufficiently meet family commitment and still adequately perform responsibilities at work.
How can this actually be achieved?
1. Map out a realistic schedule
Have a plan that properly separates work time and family time do not mix both. Work should never interfere with the time you spend with your family, now this is where most of us get it wrong we tend to bring home hanging works that we could not get done during the day and this is not right.
Work should be done during work hours and if not finished in time, leave it have a break go home to your family, have a wonderful time with them and then face those outstanding works the next day.
2. Cooperate with your partner
Your partner should not be left out on your schedule. Put heads together to finalize what schedule works best for both your career while nonetheless putting the family in view with this you both can effectively manage your time so that at least your kids get to see one of you when the other is unavoidably absent.
3. Create special family time
Normally after working so hard at work, we come back home tired and exhausted and we would want to go straight to bed but that’s not healthy for the family.
No matter how tired, you may attempt to have a brief chat with your kids and partner before finally returning to bed. Also try to make weekends very productive do some special activities like going out, catching fun.
Do not forget that this a delightful time to bond with your kids and partner.
Get to know their activities, their new friends, be patient enough to allow them to talk freely to u about their interests. Go on vacation and make the best of it, use the opportunity to create good memories.
4. Reduce distraction
Discipline pays off a lot if you really want to be successful in achieving balance both in your career and your life. You must strive to cultivate the habit of putting away things that will not contribute positively to your career and family, I call them TIME WASTERS….things like social media, movies, chatting with friends….all these either encroach into your business time or your family time.
I know one cannot totally eliminate these but believe me it will do you good if you actually try to limit these time wasters and put the time into your career or into spending time with family.
5. Take care of yourself:
Of what use is achieving balance if you lose yourself in the process, you need time for yourself away from family and work; let’s look at it from my perspective imagine you start losing your mental health, become cracky and stressed out you most definitely know that this will have an effect on your work and dealings at home.
Don’t ever forget that you also are important and the more reason you have to take good care of yourself. Try to sign up for a yoga class, visit friends, do those things that interest you, and help you air out Trust me this will do you good.
Conclusion
In reality, work-family balance helps one to be more productive, make more money, and still be happy and fulfilled.
