5 Ways to Know it’s Time to Hire

A true story and tips from a creative entrepreneur.

Recently I went through the hiring process for my design agency, which was hard for me to come to! Like most solopreneurs, we’re used to doing everything ourselves and being the one-person-show. Until it starts to stress you out beyond belief and you can’t keep up anymore! Today’s article is going to share five tips and reasons why it might be helpful for you to hire.

Deciding to hire a web designer and developer to help with my workload at Wood Media was a huge decision that took me far longer to decide on than it should of. Hiring is tricky and I found myself constantly asking if it was the right time to do it.

It wasn’t until I was at a conference and the speaker said, “It’s time to hire when you’re ready to grow.” That made me realize, that yes I need to hire in order to grow at the rate I want to grow.

1. Are you so busy that you are starting to not love what you do every day?

At some point, everyone gets to the point where they’re so busy with business that they don’t have a moment to just breathe and enjoy smelling the flowers. You only can live like that for so long until it starts to affect you, which can make you start to dislike what you’re doing in your day-to-day life.

I realized it was time to hire when I started to feel like I just wish I could take a bit of a breather and have some support. I wanted to be able to keep going non-stop but I couldn’t. The biggest priority for my design agency is to always have high-quality designs and amazing client communication. I knew if I didn’t hire out something soon then those items may have suffered. Hence why I now have a web designer and developer on Wood Media’s team in addition to me as the lead designer.

2. Is it hard for you to keep up with everything and your personal life is suffering because of it?

Eventually, that hamster wheel gets to be a bit too crazy where you’re working non-stop outside of your business hours. You start to stay up a bit too late or work too long multiple days in a row. But you still feel behind, it’s not possible to get caught up.

Your values and the reasons why you became self-employed most likely start to dwindle away because you need to just keep up with everything going on. Even if it’s just a small amount of help with tasks that take up a bunch of your time, it’s completely worth it if that means you have more peace in your life.

3. Are you ready to hand off a piece of your business so I can provide even more quality products and services for your customers?

This is something I feel you’ll never be 100% ready to do. Handing off a piece of your business is like trusting someone with your baby. In time you’ll get a process created for hiring, training, and communication within your business to maintain your core values for your business without a problem.

4. Do you feel like you’re on a never-ending hamster wheel?

This is a huge sign that you might need some help or some improvement with your systems. This is something I looked at majorly before hiring. I wanted to know if it was actually time to hire or if my systems needed help. Automating my systems was a huge part that helped me realize, that yes that’s done so I do need to hire.

Do you need help determining this and want to chat? Let’s schedule a free call. I’d love to help navigate you even a little bit if you need help. :)

5. Which type of hiring do you need to do right now, contractors or employees?

Personally, I started by hiring contractors with room to grow into an employee eventually. Depending on your business and your finances it’s best to consult with your accountant and they’ll be able to navigate you in the right direction.
