5 Warning Signs It’s Time To Leave

I understand we don’t always work to have fun; work isn’t supposed to be a holiday camp. However, I believe work should energise you and not make you miserable.
You’d be surprised how many people stay in their jobs when they should have plucked up the courage and left.
Should I go or should I stay? That’s the $64,000 question. When you stay on for too long, you experience Fight or Flight. If you are in either of the camps, you’ll know how mentally exhausting it can be.
It’s Time To Go
I’m putting my money on it being time to split if you’re ticking any of these boxes:
- You’ve lost your mojo and dread going to work
- Career stagnation
- Toxic work environment
- You’ve been in the role too long
- You’re overlooked for promotion
Let’s look at each one in a bit of detail
- You’ve lost your mojo and dread going to work
Remember the days when the sound of the alarm clock meant a new adventure? If those days are long gone, and you find yourself hitting the snooze button too many times, it might be a red flag.
Losing your mojo means more than just the occasional Monday blues; it’s about a persistent sense of disinterest and even dread when you think about heading into the office.
Your job should be a source of challenge and fulfilment, not a daily grind that drains the life out of you.

2. Career stagnation
It’s like treading water in a vast ocean without seeing the shore. If you’ve been in the same position for an eternity, with no signs of growth or development, that stagnation can seep into your professional life.
A lack of new challenges or opportunities to learn and grow can lead to boredom and a sense of unfulfillment. A healthy career allows you to stretch your skills and evolve.

3. Toxic work environment
Work should be where you feel supported, motivated, and valued. If your workplace is a breeding ground for negativity, gossip, or even harassment, it’s a clear sign that the environment is toxic.
Constant conflicts, a lack of teamwork, and pervasive distrust can erode your well-being and hinder your professional progress. A healthy work environment fosters collaboration, open communication, and colleague mutual respect.

4. You’ve been in the role too long
Comfort can quickly turn into complacency. If you’ve been in the same position for an extended period, it might be a sign that you’re no longer being challenged or outgrown your current role.
The danger here is that you may become stuck in a routine, and your skills might stagnate. A fulfilling career involves continuous growth and the opportunity to take on new responsibilities that align with your evolving expertise and ambitions.

5. You’re overlooked for promotion
Picture this: you’re putting in the effort, going above and beyond, but when it comes time for promotions, you find yourself perpetually overlooked.
It’s not just about the title or the corner office — it’s about recognition for your hard work and the chance to take on more significant responsibilities.
If you consistently feel undervalued and see others leapfrogging ahead, it’s a clear signal that your talents might be better appreciated elsewhere.

Don’t Throw the Towel In On A Whim
Hold your horses. Don’t throw the towel in just yet because haste can be costly in the long run. It pays handsome dividends to do a bit of research before plunging into the job hunt. Find some time to ask yourself the following:
- What’s important to you when it comes to your career?
- How would you like to work?
- Where would you like to work?
