5 Traits of Highly Successful People
#3 Always taking action instead of coming up with excuses
Contrary to popular belief, highly successful people do not just stumble on their dream career and magically happen to be good at it.
We look at these people in awe and wish that we could be as lucky as them. In most cases, we don’t see the hard work behind their success. We only see them at their peak moment in life and overlook the troubles and sacrifices that contributed to their current success.
People who grow to be successful have some common traits or practices they apply to their daily lives, and we can also learn and implement some of them to achieve our respective goals.
The key to getting on the path to success is to repeatedly apply said practices, in an effort to reduce the gap between who we are today and who we wish to become.
Knowing Where to Focus
Successful people know that the more you focus on achieving one thing, you will significantly increase your chances of being successful.
They concentrate on their most important goal and focus all their efforts on making it a reality. Additionally, they are quite mindful of the fact that multitasking harms the quality of their outcome.
You can’t do any one thing well because you’re trying to do many things poorly.
If you want to achieve mastery, you have to constantly put in the hours and effort to become the best at what you do.
Acting Against Fear
While no one is immune to fear, successful people know how to embrace it. They can deal with being uncertain and uncomfortable.
They acknowledge that the more you procrastinate due to fear, the uncertainty never goes away. Therefore, it makes more sense to act against fear rather than hoping that the feeling goes away, which ironically becomes worse the longer you wait.
How to embrace uncertainty:
1. Overcome fear by practicing to step outside out of your comfort zone.
2. Change your perspective on failure and become comfortable with things not going your way. It’s impossible to always expect perfection. Instead, accept your humanity and learn to work with what you are given.
“To feel like you’re always awesome, you need to either divorce yourself from reality or be on a treadmill of constantly proving your value.” —Eric Barker
3. Be aware of your thinking patterns, as your thoughts grow stronger with constant repetition. Thoughts become action and action becomes a habit. So, ensure that in your day to day actions you are being the person you wish to become.
Avoid Making up Excuses
Successful people don’t let excuses stop them from taking action towards their goals.
Most people who procrastinate can find excuses to avoid taking responsibility. That way, they can always tell themselves that they have a “good reason” for not being where they want to be in life.
They tell themselves things like they are not good enough, smart enough, or young enough. They might even say they are just unlucky or try to blame someone else.
Once they’ve found the perfect excuse, they stick with it for so long that it becomes forged into their subconscious. They honestly believe this alibi is the reason they can’t move forward.
If you know someone in your close circle who is successful, you will notice that they never come up with excuses. They just put themselves out there and take action.
Having Confidence in Themselves and Their Work
Successful people are confident in themselves and their abilities because they are good at what they do.
They work hard, put in the hours, and they prove to themselves that through their actions they are capable of creating the desired outcomes. This confidence then is a result of success.
So, the important thing is to become good at what you do and your confidence will naturally increase.
Having the right mindset is also very important because when you have faith in yourself, you believe that you can achieve whatever you set your mind to.
How much we can do depends on how much we think we can do.
When you don’t have absurd expectations and allow yourself to operate with an open mind, without tension, that’s when you create the best results.
Confidence positively affects your performance, and you operate best when you aren’t stressed or afraid of making mistakes.
Embracing self-compassion
Successful people feel good about themselves without inflating their ego. They don’t feel the need to constantly prove that they are worthy.
They recognize reality for what it is, they see their mistakes and don’t judge themselves harshly when they fail. They treat themselves just like a friend would. With compassion and understanding.
Using this approach allows them to take responsibility and face problems without getting negatively affected by them and they constantly work on improving themselves.
