5 Tips for Newbies on Medium to Rock Their Writing Game
Propel yourself to confidence and finding your voice with these tips!

If you’re a newbie on Medium, welcome to the wild world of online writing! Don’t let the platform’s fancy design and sophisticated community scare you away.
When I started writing on Medium in Oct 2020, I had no idea what I was doing. I thought my life was too incredibly boring even to consider writing about.
I’ve always been shy and introverted, but I love sharing my ideas and thoughts. Writing has always been a private affair for me, but little did I know that thousands of writers and readers out there resonate with what I have to say — I just had to say it out loud!
I’m here to help you boost your confidence and find your voice on Medium. In this article, I’ll share five tips to help you rock your writing game and make your mark on Medium.
Five Tips to Boost Your Writing
Write what you know (and love)
Remember that old saying, “write what you know”?
It still holds true on Medium! Write about topics that you’re passionate about and have some knowledge of.
When I first started writing on Medium, I wrote about everything, just to see what would stick. It didn’t work because there were some topics I didn’t enjoy writing about or didn’t have enough subject matter expertise. The articles I ended up discovering that worked well, in the end, were the articles that covered topics I knew most about.
Whether it’s cooking, yoga, or weird conspiracy theories, your readers will appreciate your expertise and enthusiasm.
Plus, writing about what you love is way more fun than forcing yourself to write about something you don’t care about.
Practice, practice, practice
Writing is like a muscle — the more you use it, the stronger it gets.
To get better at writing, you gotta practice regularly. Try to write every day, even if it’s just for 10 minutes. You’ll be surprised how much progress you can make in a short amount of time.
And don’t worry about being perfect — just get those words out! Use Grammarly to correct your grammatical errors, but write with your voice. Your readers will be much more engaged with you if you’re writing authentically and that will only come with consistent practice.
Mix it up
Medium is a playground for writers, so don’t be afraid to experiment with different styles and formats.
You can write anything from personal essays to listicles to satirical news articles.
If you’re feeling adventurous, try combining different styles to create something truly unique. Who knows, you might start a new trend on Medium!
For example, I recently created Visual Pages, to house my poems & digital illustrations since I didn’t know a publication that combined the two. I secretly hope it grows big one day!
Get feedback (but not from your mom)
Sharing your writing can be scary, but it’s also essential for growth.
Join writing groups or communities on Medium and ask for feedback from other writers. Facebook Medium groups are abundant and everywhere.
Don’t just rely on your mom or your best friend — they’re probably not the most objective critics. Take constructive feedback seriously and use it to improve your writing.
Also, don’t forget to study your stats and dashboard to see where you’re getting the most views and engagements. Data can serve as great insights to help guide you on your writing path.
Make friends
Writing can be a lonely business, but it doesn’t have to be.
Get to know other writers on Medium by introducing yourself in the About Me Stories community, where thousands of other writers have connected through learning about each other’s backgrounds.
You never know who you might meet — a potential collaborator, mentor, or friend who understands your writer's struggles. I could never have imagined meeting so many fellow writer friends through the platform, Twitter, and other random places over the last two years.
Plus, having friends on Medium makes the platform way more fun and less intimidating!
I hope these tips have inspired you to rock your writing game on Medium. Writing doesn’t have to be complicated or scary.
Remember to have fun, be yourself, and take risks in your writing. With a little practice and networking, you can become a writing superstar on Medium.
So go forth and write your heart out — I (and the world) can’t wait to see what you come up with!
