5 Tips for Medium Beginners to Become Fulfilled
3. Be consistent
I was one of the 1000 people who got the 500$ incentive from Medium. Not sure why/how, but it happened and I was chuffed.
Since then, new writers on Medium have been asking me how to be good at Medium.
There are thousands of articles out there, but I thought I would add my say to them after being on here for nearly two years.
Side note: I am no influencer or high-sky earning Medium user, but I have found love and light here in a multitude of ways. If you want to find fulfilment through writing on here, then read on.
1. Don’t make money your motive
“You can only become truly accomplished at something you love. Don’t make money your goal. Instead pursue the things you love doing and then do them so well that people can’t take their eyes off of you.” — Maya Angelou
First but foremost, don’t make money your go-to on Medium. If you become swallowed up by making money, then there’s no point.
You may succeed or you may not, it really depends.
I think making good money on Medium comes from a recipe of good luck, consistency, community, and will power.
If you have it in you, then go for it.
But let me just say, Medium isn’t the place to come to and make lots of money straight away. It takes time and dedication.
On the other hand, if you are like my friend Krishna V Chaudhary who came on here only a few months ago and is already earning three or four figures a month, then you can see it is possible.
I see that he is very dedicated and motivated to earning more money, so he does.
It’s like anything — if you really want it, then you will get it.
I do believe in the power of karma and good will.
What you want you get if you are prepared to put the effort in, right?
However, money isn’t everything.
Remember: Money is only something that comes from good work on here. In fact, you are going to earn good money on here if you find community (the next point), but again, it isn’t everything.
In life, don’t be carried away by money.
Earning money is great, but it is the writing that you should primarily love just for the sake of it.
As any creative, you must like your work for it to thrive.
It’s like when I wrote my number 1 bestselling Amazon self-help book.
I wrote it everyday because I wanted people to heal from within and see that they are made of love and light.
Of course, I wanted to make moeny from it, but when I wrote my first short self-help book, I noticed that it is quite unrealistic for you to make so much money from a book unless you are famous already or have a big publication rooting for you.
In the end, it didn’t mean that I failed because the book is still selling and will keep selling because I believe in it, but it doesn’t earn me a living.
The point is as a creator, don’t make money your motive as you will become dissapointed quite easily and maybe take away the jolliness of your work to begin with.
Make creation your motive and see the money flow in afterwards.
The next tip, which is very useful, is to:
2. Find community
“The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.” — Coretta Scott King
Wherever it may be, find community.
I have been on Facebook for a while now in all the Medium groups.
I know my friend Vishnu*s Virtues doesn’t like them and sticks to organic growth by spending hours commenting and connecting with others directly on Medium.
Whichever way you like, connect with others.
I also used to be part of a slack writing group made by the amazing Kelly Eden. However, I soon noticed that group chats just aren’t my thing. I am so bad with keeping up with them and then feel bad for checking in weeks later.
I am like this with every group chat, even on Whatsapp. I am part of a Whatsapp chat for a mental health magazine I contribute to seldomly and they are always checking in.
I have noticed the more people check in on groups, the less involved I get. It’s weird, I know, but it also may be to do with my depression.
So when I realised that these groups aren’t working for me, I came to Facebook groups.
You see the great thing about Facebook groups is that you don’t have to necessarily keep up with conversation, but just have to post your story and read others.
There is limited conversation, but that is how I like it.
Of course I interact with others who have interacted with my story, but it is pretty simple.
You just post your story on one of the groups and let people know to share their stories too underneath and then click, read, and clap for others too.
I know for sure that Krishna V Chaudhary utilises Facebook groups to his utter best and has probably earned quite a lot of money due to being a part of them and consistently communicating with others about their stories.
You see: You have the option of just copy and pasting your link everywhere and hoping people will read it, or you actually connect with others and write “thanks for sharing, I enjoyed your story” or something to let the person know you actually read it.
Use groups but also be communicative on Medium itself.
Spend some time everyday writing and then spend some time communicating and building community.
This means commenting on people’s posts that resonate with you and connect with like-minded people.
I have connected with some amazing people on here and it is all down to being open and friendly — are you ready?
The next tip for Medium beginners to be more fulfilled is to:
3. Be consistent
“The key to success is consistency.” — Zak Frazer
We all know that consistency helps everyone.
Whether it be the writing in the morning or jogging in the evening, consistency is key to building habits.
So what habit are you wanting to build through Medium?
A writing habit of course! Duh!
I have written about this before — you can find out how to be consistent as a beginner writer here:
How to be Consistent as a Beginner Writer | by Graceygee | Writers’ Blokke | May, 2021 | Medium
We all talk about it on Medium and it’s because it is true!!
In order to become popular, well paid, or your work to simply be seen, you must stay consistent.
This doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to post twice a day, but it means that you have to post a few times a week.
I personally would love to be one of those people that could bash out an article every 20 minutes so I could post twice a day, but unfortunately, it takes me around half an hour to an hour to write and edit an in-depth article like this one.
But that’s OK. I don’t beat myself up about it.
Some days I don’t feel like writing, whereas other days I am on fire.
It is the same with my current book I am writing — some days all I can think about is the book and want to write the whole time, whereas other days I get writer’s block and don’t know what to say. (That is also because I am nearing the end and if any of you are authors, you will understand nearing to the end of your book is scary so may put pressure on you.)
Being consistent means showing up when and where you need to.
Make a schedule for yourself if you want — write down what time everyday you will sit down and write.
Be disciplined.
I wish I could be more disciplined and preach to you, but I am queen procrastinator at times, so let’s leave this one out hehe.
4. Write about what you love
“Write what you love and love what you write” — Ray Bradbury
If this isn’t the most important tip, then I don’t know what is.
You must always always write what you love.
Why so, I hear you ask?
Because people can tell.
People can tell if you are bullshitting them with some fantasy ficition that you think is going to perform well for the sake of it.
Nah, we don’t want fake, we want real.
Everyone on Medium reads stories because they want to feel passion from the person and hear a bit about their lives.
I know for me writing about writing, hardships with mental health issues, self-help, nature, and love (as of recent when falling in love in a mental clinic: Love Can Bloom Anywhere: 3 Lessons on How I Found Love in a Mental Clinic | by Graceygee | Hello, Love | Medium) is good for me.
It has taken me a while to figure out what it is that I like about writing and it was there all along in front of my face — journaling.
I have journaled all my life from travelling to India to my ninth birthday. I figured out that my style of writing is my flow of subconscious and that is what people like about my writing style.
Enough about my writing style — that isn’t why you are here!
Basically, figure out what you love about writing and stick with it.
It may be films, fiction or fantasy, but remember: anything goes.
Be yourself.
That is most important.
Be yourself and you will achieve anything you like!
Be yourself and you will write with passion and motivation like me right now.
It is my passion to help people find peace, so that is why I am writing this. I know that Medium can be stressful for some people who want to make a lot of money straight away, so I hope this helps.
That is also why I am a coach — I want to help people be less stressed and more fulfilled in life.
Enough about me again!
Last but not least, the top tip for Medium beginners to become fulfilled is to:
5. Comment and care
“Do not say but show you care” — Lailah Gifty Akita
Showing you care on this platform is golden.
If you learn to comment and care, then you will go far.
Don’t just comment this or that on a post, but show the person you have read their article and show them that you are there for them.
This way, you build up understanding and most importantly, reads for your articles as well!
When you support others, they will want to support you too.
I mean that is what life is like, right?
We lift eachother up to feel lifted.
It is the same ball game with Medium and you can do it.
The more I realised that if I am myself on here and show I care, the more people will want to read my articles.
I care because that is me. But maybe you don’t.
Well sorry to say but you have to show you care to succeed on Medium.
Have I said care too much now?
I don’t care hehe. Just want you to understand the message I am saying.
The takeaway
The five tips for Medium beginners to become fulfilled consist of:
- Showing you care and commenting with consideration
- Writing about what you truly love
- Becoming consistent with your writing
- Finding community and nurturing it
- Not making money your motive!
