5 Tips for Making Friends As An Adult

It may not be easy, but it will be worth it

As an introvert who has worked from home for nearly two decades, I understand that the struggle is real when it comes to making friends. After moving a few times and losing touch with people I used to know, I woke up one day and realized that the only person I could invite out to the movies with me was my husband. He’s great and all, but I can’t depend on him for all my social interaction, so I decided to get out and make new friends.

Making new friends is hard as a grown-up. The pandemic has made it even harder. If you are struggling to find friends, you’re not alone. There are plenty of awesome people just like you who find it difficult. If you want to change things and find a few grown-up friends you can hang out with, try these tips.

Be intentional

You’ll have to approach life with the intention of making some new friendships. I actually listed it with my other goals for the next few months.

  • finish my book,
  • clean out my inbox,
  • make some new friends

Holding that intention in your head will help you notice people you could be friends with and find new opportunities to meet people.

Contact old friends

Try reaching out to old friends who you’ve lost touch with over the years. With social media, it’s easier to find people you used to know than ever before. Check up on your old friends and see how they’re doing. Then test the waters and see if you can rekindle your old friendship.

Reach out to acquaintances

Do you have a neighbor or coworker you really get along with who you would like to get to know better? Invite them to do something with you. One of the best places to find friends is among the pool of people you already know.

Join a group

Join a book club, take a yoga class, or sign up for a photography workshop. If you have a hobby that you’d like to learn more about, find a group of people who are interested in the same thing.

You’ll be able to share your interests with like-minded individuals and make friends at the same time.

There are plenty of places to meet people if you go out and make an effort. I’ve listed some of the places you can go below:

  • Work
  • Classes and workshops
  • Online groups
  • Hobbies and interest groups
  • Church or religious organizations
  • Sports leagues
  • Volunteering
  • Political campaigns and meetings

Put in the effort

If you want to have friends, sometimes you’ll just have to be the one to make an effort. Be the person who invites people out, sends the group text, and plans the get-togethers. That will probably put you outside of your comfort zone, but don’t worry. It’s good for you. It may seem like a lot of work at first, but it will pay off, and it will get easier the more you do it.

One problem I often have is that I wait for people to invite me to places, but I’ve learned sometimes I need to initiate things. The worst thing that can happen is they can say no, which isn’t that bad.

No pressure

Relax and have a good time.

Not everyone you meet up with is going to be your friend. You might have to kiss a few frogs to find your prince, as they say, but in time you’ll meet someone you click with.
