5 Things to Do to Find a Job in Tech When You Have Just Graduated
If you first give, you will easily get back
Everyone knows the famous saying:
I can’t get a job because I don’t have experience. I can’t get experience because I don’t have a job.
Unfortunately, although crazy it’s true, especially in tech. However, luckily, there is a way to break the cycle and get experience without a job. Yes, you read it right, you can get experience without a job. Here are some ways you can do this in the tech industry:
1.Do you have a friend who has founded a startup? Volunteer to work for free and design their website, setup their sales tools and manage their IT systems. It will take you minimal effort, but now you can add this as an experience in your CV. Your grateful friend will most likely be happy to give you a reference as well.
2. There is this NGO that you like and support? Volunteer to create their database of donations and deliver some training on basic tech skills to the volunteers. You just got another line in the CV, plus a great story to share during the interviews.
3. Do you know this meetup group in your city where they ask people to share knowledge and experience? Volunteer to give a presentation about data science or your favorite part of tech. Many professionals in the industry will see how passionate you are and will recommend jobs and opportunities for you.
4. You always had this company you admire and where you would love to work? Find a vulnerability or bug in their system and report it to them. If they take their tech seriously, they will most likely reward and remember you.
5. Do you care about the security of everyone on the Internet? Write articles in Medium or LinkedIn to raise awareness and help people to get secure online. You will show your expertise to many professionals and maybe somewhere in the audience is your future employer who will be impressed by your commitment.
I just shared five different ways to get experience in different domains without having a job.
If you do all of them, you will have a very diverse CV. More diverse than those who have two years of work experience in tech but have stayed in the same role. They have just one line of experience in their CV, and you will have several.
You will get a dream job without even competing with others because you will be the most special candidate.
We are all so focused on what we can get in life – getting the job, getting the salary, getting the promotion.
Just because we are supposed to have a job, we feel entitled to get one. So we become so stressed and anxious when we can’t get it, even when we have done nothing special to deserve it.
If only we changed the perspective for one moment, and we focus on what we can give. Life would be so much easier, and we wouldn’t need to fight to get anything.
All the opportunities, jobs, achievements and blessings will be easily given to us.
It’s just the law of life: The more you give, the more you get!
I wrote this article for all the graduates who are facing the job market for the first time this summer. Good luck in your career journey, may it be filled with lots of giving experiences. Now, go give ‘em tiger!
