re someone who perpetually seeks isolation I want to challenge you to break that. I’ll never forget the analogy I heard once of someone describing isolation as being an island. When hurricanes come(and they will come) the hardest hit places are always the islands. They are cut off from the protection and benefit of being surrounded by other bodies of land. The same is true for us. When the storms of life come, it’s much easier to be taken out and not get back up when you don’t have people you can lean on for support. The easiest community to find is to find other people who have the same likes you do. If you like to paint, go to a painting class that meets once a week. Like to play sports, join a rec league. Like to try new beers, go to local breweries(they’re almost always having weekly events and regulars there). 5 Things To Do Before You Turn 30

The inevitable is coming. Nobody ever thinks it will happen to them, but in one week I will be hitting the dreaded 30-year-old milestone. Now before you go and write me off as old and senile, hear me out…I’m 100% okay with it! Before 2020 started, I looked at turning 30 as the beginning of the end. Something that was to be feared rather than celebrated. When 2020 hit I made a conscious decision that I wasn’t gonna fear 30, that I was going to look forward to it and embrace it when it came.

Well, it’s here…

Turning 30 has caused me to look back on my life and consider the legacy I am leaving. What have I done? Have I left the world a better place than I found it? How will my next 30 shape up? As I was reflecting, it got me thinking of what are some of the most important things I’ve learned and would want to tell my kids before they turn 30. So below is a list of the top 5 things to make sure you do before you turn 30. Let me know what you would add!Spend Time Learning Yourself

Spend Time Learning Yourself

Growing up this wasn’t something that was openly preached to society, especially for us men, especially especially for us athletic men. Getting in touch with your feelings, taking different types of personality tests, taking yourself on dates…all these things would’ve been mocked pretty heavily if you were doing it openly. But each one is so necessary in order to be the healthiest version of yourself. Your 20’s are a time where you are going to change the most, you’ll probably experience success, failure, heartbreak, love, chaos, peace, etc. all within a few years. Knowing how you respond to those different experiences is vital.

Get A Mentor

None of us have all the answers in life, and we can’t see more than a couple of steps in front of us. Luckily we are surrounded by people who have been where we are, and who currently are where we want to get to. FIND THOSE PEOPLE! I’ve been blessed to have a few different mentors over the years in all areas including athletically, spiritually, relationally, and financially. Sometimes it requires you to have more than one person like this in your life, but the dividends from it are priceless. There really isn’t a price tag on having a relationship with someone who sees your current circumstances and can give you a clear trajectory of your life if you stay on that path.

Travel

This is probably one of my favorite things. Go to as many different places as possible, and I don’t mean like your neighboring state for the weekend. Go see the world! Visit as many different countries and experience as many different cultures as you can. Get you a passport and get on the plane(if you’re too afraid to get on a plane, know that you’re more likely to get into an accident in that car you were in today over a plane). For my U.S. readers, if going to another country isn’t practical right now there are a few places here at home that are a must. The Grand Canyon, Washington D.C.(try to go in the spring when the cherry blossoms are blooming), New York City(winter time is the best when the Christmas decorations are up and skating rink and at night), the Rockies(snowboarding here was on my bucket list), ANY beach in Florida, and Alaska(went here for a basketball tournament, unreal how cold it gets).

(I still have Mt. Rushmore, Hawaii, the Bahamas, and the Great Lakes on my list. What’re some other places I should add?)

Join Some Type Of Community

I can’t stress enough how hindering isolation can be. We all go through times when it’s best to be alone for a little however if you are someone who perpetually seeks isolation I want to challenge you to break that. It’s amazing how quickly a friendship can build when it starts with the foundation of shared interests.

Regularly Meet People Outside Of Your Community

Once you find your community, it’s time to branch out haha! Too many people get stuck in being surrounded by only people who look like, talk like, or think like them. It can be uncomfortable at first, but it’s important to meet different people that challenge you to grow as an individual. Meeting different types of people allows you to gain new perspectives and empathize with someone you may not have before. There were so many misconceptions and stereotypes I had about different groups of people, and once I began building relationships in those groups I realized I was completely wrong. This helps us grow as humans.

These are all things I’ve done before my 30th, and things I’m going to continue to do after my 30th. They’ve all caused me to become a better version of myself. What’s something that you would add to your list?

Much Love
