5 Steps to Resolve Any Problem
The first step is not to find a solution
I guess we’ve all been there — you are staring at a problem, feeling a bit lost. You start seeking answers, then it suddenly strikes you that you have a solution. You scream Eureka! Eureka!! But hold up! What if I told you that you missed something, that there is a better approach?
Before we jump into finding a solution, let’s take a few steps backward and walk through five crucial steps that guarantee a better solution and the implementation of the solution. Ready? Let’s go.
1. Define the Cause of the Problem
You wouldn’t start a journey without knowing your destination, right? Similarly, tackling a problem begins with understanding what caused it in the first place. Do a Root Cause Analysis (RCA), which is the process of discovering the root causes of problems to identify appropriate solutions. It’s like putting on detective shades and searching for clues. So, what’s at the root of this problem? Define it clearly, and you’re on your way to not just finding the solution, but also preventing similar problems in the future.
2. Analyse the Problem
Now that we’ve got the cause under our detective belts, let’s dissect the problem. Break it into bite-sized pieces. What are the interconnected issues? By analysing, we gain a more profound understanding of the problem’s nuances. Remember, knowledge is power.
3. Identify Possible Solutions
Hold off on that superhero cape; this isn’t the moment to save the day just yet. Instead, let’s brainstorm. What are the potential ways to tackle the problem? There are different ways to solve the problem. Be creative; jot down ideas without judgment. Take suggestions from your team or other people. The goal here is to build a menu of options. The more, the merrier!
4. Implement the Selected Solution
Okay, it’s decision time. Select the solution that seems most promising. This is your superhero moment — the cape is on! Roll up your sleeves and put that solution into action. Execute the plan with precision, and don’t forget to adapt if surprises pop up. Flexibility is your sidekick.
5. Confirm That the Solution Actually Solved the Problem
Ever finished a jigsaw puzzle only to realise a piece was missing? Let’s avoid that feeling with our problem-solving. Confirm that the solution did the trick. Evaluate the results. Did it address the cause we defined in step one? If yes, hooray! If not, no worries — we’ve got a superhero toolkit full of solutions to try.
These are the five steps to tackle any problem that comes your way. Thank you for reading. I would appreciate your feedback as I am trying out shorter forms of writing.
