Are you posting on TikTok but not gaining any traction?

Although growing in TikTok is not as simple as it was in 2020. It’s still possible for you to grow an account from scratch to thousands or even millions of followers in 2023. You just have to be strategic.

If you’re ready to build a monetizable TikTok account from scratch, these 5 tips will help you get there.

5 Tips to Grow a TikTok Account from Scratch

1. Focus on SEO

More and more of us are using TikTok as a way to find solutions to our problems. Because of that, getting seen on TikTok is more like getting found in a Google search or on Pinterest.

In other words, make your content searchable by using keywords everywhere you can.

The first step to optimize your TikTok for SEO is to search for the topic you intend to make a video for. From there, you can discover what people are searching for and base your content around that.

EXAMPLE: Using the search bar, type in a word or phrase related to your niche. From there, you will see tons of other searches populate below it.

These are keywords you can try to rank for and even use as content ideas. Next, press search and scroll past the first few rows of videos. There you will find the “others searched for” section with even more keywords.

Where to Include Keywords

  • The actual words you use if you speak in your video
  • In your caption
  • Your hashtags
  • The text overlay and captions on your video

2. Create Bingeable Content

One of the best ways to build a community on TikTok is to create bingeable content. If you think about what motivates you to follow someone, it’s usually one of three options:

  1. You see a video that interests you, so you decide to check out their profile. You’ll likely watch a few more videos before deciding whether to follow them or not.
  2. You keep seeing the same person pop up on your feed before deciding to actually follow them.
  3. You might follow a creator because they are doing a series, or there’s a “part 2” video you don’t want to miss.

So, the moral of the story is: create bingeable content and make it obvious.

When someone looks at your profile, it should be obvious to them what each video is about. Make sure your videos have a cover or text overlay, so your audience knows what they are looking at.

3. Provide Value

It’s not about you; it’s about them.

Growing on TikTok or any platform will be difficult if you lack clarity. You need to know exactly what value you provide your audience. Do they learn from you? Are you entertaining?

Why should anyone watch your content?

It is possible to grow an entire community based on your personality. No matter what niche you’re in, showing your personality is key. But if you’re boring and your content isn’t relatable in some way, you’ll have a tough time growing.

So, you have to get clear on why people should follow you. Is it because you’re funny and relatable? Is it because you’re teaching them how to develop healthy habits? Is it because they’ll find interior design inspiration? Is it because you create visually appealing videos that are satisfying to watch?

You have to give something to your audience if you want to grow. People don’t watch your videos to be nice, they watch them because they get something from them.

4. Focus on Quality

Increasing the quality of your videos will come with time. But aim to get 1% better with each video. Whether that’s using better lighting, camera angle, or editing.

Something as simple as improving the lighting can make a huge difference.

Even if your content is great, you won’t see as much growth if your video quality is poor.

This doesn’t mean you need to buy a new phone or camera; make small improvements with what you have. Then invest in upgrades down the road, when and if they’re right for you.

At the bare minimum, your videos should be clear, have decent lighting, and clear sound. If you’re filming a talking video and you decide to include background music, make sure it’s barely audible. I’ve seen too many videos where the music is distracting us from what you’re saying, and I quickly scroll away.

Work on improving your videos by at least 1% each time you film. Consider how you can improve your editing style to make your videos more engaging.

5. Trim the Fat

Let’s talk about the actual meat of your videos. In the world of short attention spans and endless amounts of engaging content. If your videos don’t suck the viewer in and engage them the entire time, they will keep scrolling.

Your video should start with a hook, either something you say, a visual hook, or even an auditory hook. Or a combination of them. Your hook should tell the viewer exactly what to expect from your video.

Cut out any awkward pauses where you’re not talking. Think about the creators in your niche that you like to watch. How do they make their videos engaging, and how can you do the same?

Many vlog-style creators hook their viewer in with an auditory ASMR-style hook. Then keep them engaged with short clips.

If they add a clip where they are talking to the camera, you won’t find long, drawn-out pauses.

To summarize, if you want to significantly increase your follower count on TikTok, focus on these 5 things:

  1. SEO
  2. Create bingeable content
  3. Provide value
  4. Improve video quality
  5. Make it engaging and get to the point
