5 Simple Tips to Make Your Space Feel Like Home
Moving into a new place does not have to be daunting

Whether you just moved into your own house or rent a room in a shared flat (calling all Londoners), moving to a new place can be daunting. It’s a chance to start anew on a blank canvas; however, it’s easy to lose your feeling of ‘home’. Here are 5 tips on how you can easily and relatively quickly reinstate that feeling of your space being your personal safe place:
1) Plants, lots of them

No, not everyone is a huge plant person. I’m certainly not. I’m terrible at keeping them alive. However, never underestimate the power of plants to make a room feel more like home. Not only are they functional (organic air purifiers), but they also allow you to reconnect with nature in your home. This is so important now that we spend so much of our lives in the digital world. I find the easiest plants to look after are Snake and Aloe Vera plants. I once bought an Aloe Vera plant from Ikea, and it survived not being watered for 4 months when the pandemic first hit. Plants have also proven to add to your overall happiness — what more could you ask for?
2) Decorate, decorate, decorate

Seems obvious, but putting up e.g. posters of the things that you identify with and that make you feel happy immediately invites a sense of ‘you’ into your new space. It will feel familiar and remind you that what makes you ‘you’ is not lost by moving into a new place.
3) The perfect rug

Placing a rug in your space is a really quick way to personalize it. Rugs are super versatile and come in all colors, shapes, and materials, meaning you’ll be able to find one that fits your aesthetic. You may have one from the previous place that screams home to you — even better. Rugs also help fill empty spaces, which are unavoidable when moving, and hence immediately make a difference in how the space feels.
4) Create Mood Lighting

When I moved to London, one of the first things I got for my new place was a sunset lamp and it changed the game. It immediately gave my room a feeling of home and serenity, especially at night. Having lights that are too bright before sleep can suppress melatonin and hence negatively affect your sleep cycle. There are so many different lights, from salt lamps to fairy lights, that you’ll be able to find one that gives your room the right atmosphere. You could even get a projector and project anything from the night sky in Australia to Studio Ghibli onto your wall.
5) The right scent will make all the difference

Often the first thing we notice when we step into a new space is the smell. When moving, it’s easy to find the new smell confusing and even offputting. Something simple as a candle can change that. Just pick your favorite scent and leave it burning for a few hours and your space will immediately feel more like home. Alternatives are air fresheners, incense sticks, or even perfume.
