No, butt-sniffing is not one of them

If I’m having a bad day at work, I look to my dog and ask if she’d like to trade places for a day or two.

She doesn’t seem to comprehend me when I suggest that she should contribute to our bills. Instead, she lolls her tongue out and looks at me with the cutest derpy-looking face, happy as can be.

My dog’s been with me for two and a half years now, and I can’t imagine life without her. She’s taught me a lot of things, and my time with her has me realizing that she doesn’t need any self-help books to find happiness. She’s already got it figured out.

Greet everyone happily and equally

I’ve never seen my dog meet someone she doesn’t like.

It doesn’t matter if they’re white, black, pink, or blue. It doesn’t matter if they’re rich, poor, or somewhere in between. It doesn’t even matter if they smell a little funny — in fact, she probably likes them all the more.

The point is she doesn’t hold prejudice against anyone for who they are, and she’ll greet them all happily, eagerly, and equally.

If someone doesn’t like you, move on

Even if you aren’t a fan of my dog, that doesn’t stop her from still trying to get you to like her. And by like her, I mean pet her.

But hey, if adorable fluffy land clouds aren’t your thing, no biggie. Her feelings aren’t hurt and she’ll continue right on. She doesn’t take it as a personal affront and she doesn’t let her ruin her day.

Enjoy the little things in life

I don’t even know why I bother spending good money on toys for her when she’s just as content playing with a toilet paper roll. She thinks the recycling bin is her toy bin, and she’ll turn literally anything into a game.

But that’s one of the secrets to happiness, isn’t it? Being happy with the things you do have and making the most out of everything, especially the little things.

There’s no need to keep up with the Joneses

She doesn’t care that other dogs might have fancier toys or bigger dog beds. She doesn’t feel like she’s at a disadvantage in life because we haven’t bought her fancy dog shoes or a backpack for our hikes.

She doesn’t care about material goods. No, she’s happiest when she’s surrounded by family and friends. She loves it when we’re spending time with her, whether we’re taking walks together or just chilling at home and petting her.

Love unconditionally

Last but not least, there’s a reason why dogs are man’s best friend. Their love for you is unconditional. She’s never mad at me, she’s never given me the cold shoulder, and she’s usually napping at my feet.

Sure, a little bit of food for motivation doesn’t hurt, but when I look into her warm brown eyes, I see love and acceptance.

One of the most memorable pieces of advice I’ve ever heard about maintaining your mental health is to see yourself the way your dog sees you.

Shall we recap the five secrets to happiness your dog already knows?

  • Greet everyone happily and equally
  • If someone doesn’t like you, move on
  • Enjoy the little things in life
  • There’s no need to keep up with the Joneses
  • Love unconditionally

While I’m not really getting anywhere trying to convince her to earn her keep, she’s more than paid me back with her love and her outlook on the world.
