5 Ridiculous Lies We Tell Ourselves About Money That Keep Us Poor
Are you guilty of these suppressing thoughts?

Money is one of the most taboo subjects around. We are taught from a young age that it’s indecent to talk about money and that we should be ashamed if we’re not wealthy.
This mentality does nothing but keep us poor. The rich get richer, even during a pandemic, while the rest of us are left to foot the bill. Why? Because we treat ourselves like mugs.
We tell ourselves ridiculous lies about money that keep us from achieving our financial goals. My life changed forever when I rejected the nonsense views about money and work I’d held onto for so long.
My head felt like it was going to explode as I tried to justify the crazy notions about the money we’re spoon-fed since infancy. Here are 5 ridiculous things I told myself, and I bet you tell yourself them too.
It’s Indecent to Talk About Money
Talking about money with friends and colleagues is transparent, inspiring, and removes control from your boss. When we talk openly about our salaries, expenses, and goals, we can create a community of supportive individuals who can help us achieve our financial goals.
We’re also able to hold our bosses accountable by discussing our salaries and the company’s expenses. This level of transparency creates a more equal power dynamic between employees and employers.
When we don’t talk about money, it gives our bosses the power to treat us like idiots and keep us in the dark. The more we are aware of each other’s financial situations, the less likely we will be susceptible to excuses for not paying employees fairly or why costs need to be cut.
Transparency is one of the most powerful tools you have at your disposal to achieve your financial goals. It also enables you to help others achieve theirs. Your friends and colleagues will thank you for telling them how much coffee should cost, so they stop paying £20 on their daily caffeine fix.
I Can Make This Work! (No, You Can’t)
I used this phrase all my life as an excuse not to take action. I can make this work! As if that was an acceptable answer when asked why my finances were in such disarray.
When your money situation is on the rocks, you don’t have time to waste energy and money trying to make it work. Making it work will only cost you more time, energy, and money that you simply do not have.
The best way out of a financial mess is by acknowledging that what you’re doing isn’t working. Then take action to change course by leaving your situation and finding something that pays more. Maybe you’ve been at the same job for 10 years, and they’re promising you a promotion “soon.”
If it’s not forthcoming, then you need to look elsewhere. Find a new job, start a side hustle, sell your stuff. If it’s not working, don’t try and convince yourself it is.
I Have to Work Full-Time
Working full-time does not make you rich. It may give you some financial stability, but it will not make you wealthy. In fact, most people who work full-time live paycheck to paycheck.
This is because they are not earning a salary reflective of their skills and experience. They are also not receiving regular raises or promotions. To become wealthy, you need to find a way to make more money than you’re currently making. This may mean starting your own business, finding a higher-paying job, or investing in yourself by taking courses and learning new skills.
This may mean sacrificing some of your free time now or going part-time while you teach yourself skills. But it is well worth the investment. When you’re able to make more money than you’re currently making, working full-time will no longer be a hindrance to your wealth-building goals.
I’m Not Good Enough
Thinking that you’re not good enough to start your own business is going to ruin your life. If you don’t believe in yourself, then no one else will. You need to have confidence in yourself and your abilities if you want to be successful. You need to be willing to take risks and put in the hard work necessary to achieve your goals.
Stop telling yourself that you’re not good enough and start believing in yourself. You can do it! The internet has infinite resources to teach you anything you want to know.
You can learn to build a website, create content, and monetize it in less than a day. You can start an online business selling products or services with just your laptop. If the thought of starting a business scares you, then take small steps first by freelancing or applying for side hustles until you feel ready to make the change.
My Boss Cares About Me
I’m sorry, but your boss doesn’t care about you. They aren’t going to offer you a raise just because it’s been a long time since the last one. Your bank account doesn’t increase their bottom line. You’re just a replaceable cog in the machine, and they know.
Companies dangle this over your head to keep you underpaid while the cost of living goes up. They use it to keep you from negotiating a better salary because they don’t want to pay more.
You need to realize that your boss doesn’t care about you and the company only cares about increasing its profits. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be making decisions based on what’s best for them instead of what’s best for their employees.
Conclusion
When you stop believing these lies, you can start taking the necessary steps to improve your financial situation. Don’t let these lies keep you poor! Start making changes today and watch your finances blossom.
