5 Reasons Why Spaniards Live Longer

There is much more to longevity than a diet. Discover the secret of longevity.

Two years ago, I moved to this small village just 25 minutes from Granada, in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Guejar Sierra is a small whitewashed village with a population of 2800.

Many of them are over 90 years old, and many are near 95. The elderly are an active part of the village’s social scene, and they are never neglected at any festivals.

Last week, we had a carnival (think Halloween) and the elderly had the most amusing and adorable costumes. They’re also great conversationalists, with a wonderful sense of humor. You see them frequently on the slopes of Guejar, walking. In Spain, elders are highly respected.

I will never forget to greet them.

Spaniards have one of the longest lifespans in the world.

Most Spaniards live longer than most people in other countries, but how do they do it?

According to research, there are several factors involved; including genetic makeup and lifestyle choices. Here are some reasons Spain has such a long life expectancy.

The Mediterranean Diet

The Mediterranean diet is one of the many factors that contribute to the health and longevity of residents of Spain. People living in different parts of Spain follow different eating traditions. However, most people follow this diet in some form or other. Some of the key components of this include fresh food, which is plentiful in Spain because of its warmer climate and longer growing season. Fresh foods such as vegetables, fruit, seafood, and olive oil are enjoyed regularly from an early age.

In many studies which have been conducted over time, it has been noticed that the life expectancy of those people who have followed this diet is higher than those who have not. Studies have shown that people who follow the Mediterranean diet are less likely to suffer debilitating diseases throughout their lives and enjoy better health for longer.

Red wine and olives

Another tradition that has been associated with increased life expectancy in Spain is drinking red wine and eating olives. Red wine and olives have long been enjoyed as part of many meals in Spain, and the antioxidant properties of the drink and olives may be responsible for some of the health benefits associated with living in Spain.

Active outdoorsy life

Another factor that is thought to contribute to the high life expectancy in Spain is the fact that Spaniards lead a more active lifestyle than many other people around the world.

Many people in Spain enjoy spending time outside, whether it is hiking in the mountains, swimming in the ocean, or simply taking a leisurely walk.

This active lifestyle means Spaniards are less likely to suffer from obesity and other chronic illnesses that can shorten their lifespan.

Spaniards are renowned for their love of outdoor activities, and the many hours spent outdoors in the sun contribute to their healthy glow.

Many people take part in regular physical activity, whether that is through walking, cycling, running, or taking part in sports.

Vibrant social life

Spaniards are also known for their sociable nature, and the strong social ties that many people have in Spain contribute to their long life expectancy.

People in Spain spend a lot of time with friends and family, and they often enjoy regular get-togethers.

This social interaction has been found to have many benefits for mental and physical health, and the sense of community that Spaniards enjoy contributes to their overall well-being. Spain has the lowest incidence of depression in the world, according to research.

Slow life

Everyone knows the “mañana” word, and it is true, Spaniards are never in a rush. They take their time to even decide. But if you are patient, things are done but at a much slower pace, which lowers your stress hormone level, and this contributes to a longer life.

Fast Life is indeed more exciting, and thrilling, but it also takes you to your grave faster. I practiced the slow for a few years, still struggling, sometimes, to keep the slow-paced, but as a person, I am so much calmer.

There are many reasons Spaniards live long lives. The Mediterranean diet, drinking red wine and olives and enjoying an active outdoorsy life all play a part. But the most important reason may be the sense of community that Spaniards enjoy. They spend a lot of time with friends and family, and this social interaction has many benefits for mental and physical health. This may be why Spaniards have such a long life expectancy.

The combination of a healthy diet, regular physical activity, and the Mediterranean lifestyle are all thought to contribute to the high life expectancy in Spain.
