5 Reasons Why Making Mistakes Is Good For You (also, there are no mistakes)

First off, to be very clear, there is no such thing as a “mistake”.

Yup, I said what I said. There is only the BELIEF that something was a mistake because we are not privy to the all the reasons things happen in this world and on this plane. Basic physics will teach you that humans only see the “visible spectrum” of electromagnetic radiation and the rest is absolutely still there, but our eyes are not equipped to see it all. The same concept applies to “mistakes” they serve a purpose and simply because you may not know the purpose does not negate the purpose. If you want to chalk that up to everything happens for a reason, then sure, but I prefer to say that all things serve a purpose because I don’t always need to know the reason for something to understand and bear witness to the purpose it serves in my life.

For some, this will sound like splitting hairs. For others, it will feel like a familiar recognition. Either way, I offer it to you as a shift in perspective. There are no “mistakes”, there are only experiences that, while sometimes painful and soul crushing, can provide us with tender wisdom that can serve us and others.

The Principle of Mental Transmutation is the idea that we can take these lessons, integrate them into our being and allow them to expand our awareness of SELF and our place in this world. This is integral to shifting your mindset about your “mistakes” because if you knew you were making “mistakes” in the name of learning and wisdom, you wouldn’t feel so bad when it happens because you’ll realize it for what it is, a lesson that can serve you and others in your sphere of influence. To break it down, here are 5 ways that making “mistakes” can actually be a guide toward healing, growth and deeper understanding of your connection to something greater than SELF.

1. You learn what you need to improve on

Could you have done it differently and gotten a different outcome? Sure! But if you hadn’t tried it the way that you did, you wouldn’t know that. Now that you stepped out, tried it, and it didn’t work, you can try something different with the confidence of knowing the other does not work.

In short, you’ve now improved your process and awareness of how you want to move forward.

2. Making mistakes mean you’re taking action

You’re not here to be a bump on a log. You’re an animated, sentient entity that came here to live your life, on purpose, in action. If you don’t try then it’s true, you’ll probably never make a “mistake” and you’ll be able to safely say you had it right, I guess. And, if that’s what you want then by all means continue. However, there is a feeling that comes when we take action towards our purpose, our goals, our dreams..a feeling of fulfillment from stepping out on faith and into the flow of our lives.

Playing it safe will probably not give you this feeling. It might, I don’t rule much out. But as we live, we are meant to feel alive and that comes with trusting our journey and taking action in the direction we wish to go.

3. Mistakes make you smarter

Mistakes can help us to realize our creativity because when something isn’t working, we are forced to recognize the ways in which it isn’t and find ways to get it to work. This is where our creativity calls on us to show up and show out, to find a way, and if we cannot, to find a way to release our attachment to the outcome.

The more mistakes you make the more you learn what NOT to do, gaining wisdom for the future about the ways in which you wish to go forward. Your mind is now thinking outside of the box it started in, tapping into your creative nature and helping you rise to the occasion.

4. Mistakes give you another opportunity to start over

Ever wished for a do-over? Well, making a mistake provides the perfect opportunity to rewind and play it again differently this time. You can go back to the proverbial drawing board and begin with a new sketch, the only thing you’ve lost is time. And that isn’t a loss, as we’ve been discussing, because we never lose when we learn, get better and do better the next time around.

5. Mistakes help build your character

Last but not least, making mistakes is human. I mean, it’s seriously one of the most human things you can do, to be honest. And this is why it’s crucial, because it allows you to see the humanity in others. When we accept that we are not perfect, we open ourselves to grace for SELF and others because we are able to realize the ways in which we are all trying, doing, growing, and being.

Have you ever met someone that cannot acknowledge when they make a mistake? Were they kind, honest, forgiving, transparent? Did you want to continue to be around them? My guess is probably not. People who cannot acknowledge their mistakes separate themselves from the rest of us and end up living isolated and lonely lives because they can’t allow others to witness their imperfections. Being human will build your character, if you allow it, and bring you closer to SELF and others.

In closing, I hope by now you can see why I initially put the word mistake with quotation marks because is there even really such a thing? Or is it, as I believe, all just lessons that teach us ways to be better, do better, live and love better? If you chose the “wrong” person to be in a relationship with, what did you learn that you will be sure to NOT repeat because hell no? Took a job that you hate and feel like was a massive mistake? Well, now you’re even more clear about how you do NOT want work and labor to show up in your life.

And before anyone comes for me behind toxic positivity, just NAH, full stop. Our mistakes can hurt, deeply, they can even cause lasting bodily harm, financial harm, emotional harm. In my opinion, this is all the more reason for me to extract the lessons from the pain so that I know I did not suffer in vain. My bad choices, suffering and “mistakes” can serve me and others, as it’s doing right now as you read this, and that gives purpose to my pain and meaning to my journey on this plane.

I hope you allow your “mistakes” to do the same.
